The speed with which Viet- nam’s population has been able to put the bitter events of its recent past behind it, and focus so steadfastly on the future, often surprises foreigners. With a population of 86 million Vietnam has become the second largest country in South East Asia. And, since having launched the “Doi Moi” (“renovation”) initiative in 1986, the pace of reform and economic growth is now moving at a rate comparable to China. Vietnam achieved around 8% annual GDP growth between 1990 to 1997 and continued at around 7% from 2000-2005.
