Water is overwhelmingly packaged in PET (86%). CSDs, at 34% PET, represent an opportunity for added market share. In Germany CSDs are 91% bottled in PET. Although the big bottled water producers are located in France the per capita consumption of non-alcoholic bever- ages is actually the lowest compared to Spain, Italy and Germany. The govern- ment in Paris is introducing reforms aimed at reversing the trend. However the planned cuts in social spending will almost certainly further dampen demand. No less worrying is the announcement by the government that they intend to increase the tax on all drinks packaging by 25%.
