REGIONAL MARKET REPORTS 15 PET planet insider Vol. 11 No. 09/10 www.petpla.net Manufacturers counteracted bad summer weather and bad publicity with innovative products – flavoured waters and functional drinks such as waters for digestion and hydration. And they more often changed formats. In doing so they also changed to lighter packaging. CSDs in France CSDs in France consist of Cola carbonates and non- cola carbonates (including lemonade/lime, orange carbon- ates, mixers and others). 1,950 million litres of carbonates were bottled in 4.4 billion packaging units in 2009, of which 34% were in PET. Sales volume increased from 1,800 million litres in 2003 to 1,950 million litres in 2009, thus increasing by 8.5%. The increase in carbonates is expected to continue at an annual rate of 0.2% over the coming years. Company shares of CSDs in volume in 2008 Coca-Cola Entreprises SA 63.7% Orangina-Schweppes 13.5% PepsiCo France 3.3% Danone 0.7% And others below 0.5%. Typical PET packages 0.5 litres 17.5 to 26g (PCO 1881 and 1810) 1.0 litre 28 to 37g (PCO 1881 and 1810) 1.5 litres 35.5 to 41.5g (PCO 1881 and 1810) 2.0 litres 45.5 to 50g (PCO 1881 and 1810) Low calorie carbonates were one of the prime sources of growth. Manufacturers developed Coca-Cola Zero for male adults, Taillefine Fiz, Coca-Cola Light and Light Plas for young women. Market leaders Coca-Cola and Orangina Schweppes discovered the older age groups and targeted their advertising communication accordingly. This is the logic behind the optimistic slight annual increase forecast for carbonates over the coming years, also largely due to the strong presence of the interna- tional giant Coca-Cola Enterprises. The carbonates sector was not much affected by the economic crisis in terms of volume, nor by the environmental dispute between national political and industrial parties.
