REGIONAL MARKET REPORTS 16 PET planet insider Vol. 11 No. 09/10 www.petpla.net Fruit/vegetable juice in France The category of fruit and vegetable juice iincludes100% juice, nectars, juice drinks, fruit flavoured drinks.Juices were bottled in 3.1 billion units in 2009, of which 26% were in PET. Sales volume of all juice types has been stagnant from 2003 to 2008 at an annual level of about 1,850 mil- lion litres. In 2009 the sales volume rose to 1,890 and is expected to continue rising by an annual 0.4% in the coming years. There is a trend from carton to PET. Fruit juices are increasingly marketed for their health ben- efits and most products are fortified with fibre, vitamins and antioxidants. Thus moderate growth is forecast. Machine suppliers have supported the trend toward PET with new hot fill lines ultra-clean and aseptic filling of their products (including Combi lines). Miscellaneous beverages in France Milk and dairy drinks 2,800 billion litres are filled by companies such as Cedi- lac SA (17.9 %), Lactalis (14.4%), Nestlé (3.3 %) and other dairies - predominantly in carton. A large volume, but a comparatively small number of milk bottles is packaged in 2-layer PET bottles (over- moulding by PDG) and interest is slowly rising for produc- ers/converters of PET bottles. Functional drinks Sports drinks (2.5 million litres) and energy drinks (24.9 million litres) from companies such as Red Bull (34.8%), Karlsbräu (14.5%), and Coca-Cola (11.2%). Markets are growing annually by more than 100%, with Red Bull per- forming very successfully. Interest by PET bottle producers is rising moderately. Edible oil Reliable business for PET converters producing PET bottles mainly by the single stage process. Detergents and cosmetics This business is growing, especially at Colgate, L’Oreal and Procter& Gamble, but volume (today 85% HDPE, 15% in PET with a trend towards PET) is still comparatively small. Sectors where PET has no real penetration Beer Out of 3,500 million total packaging units for beer 2,600 million are in glass and only 3 million in PET. Wine Out of 2,400 million total packaging units for wine 2,000 million are in glass and only 12 million in PET.
