PREFORM PRODUCTION 11 PET planet insider Vol. 13 No. 01+02/12 www.petpla.net during the blowing process distrib- uted itself over the entire bottle. Thus, material taken from the base can be used to increase bottle strength, or it can be removed from the bottle alto- gether, resulting in material savings. Testing for maximum burst pres- sure also showed improvement. PET bottles have traditionally tended to crack in the sprue area, at an aver- age pressure of approximately 10 to 11bar, due to the crystallisation of material build-up in the base area. The LightBase bottles reached pres- sures of 11.5 to 12.5bar before crack- ing, and the sprue was no longer the weakest point: the LightBase bottles cracked in the body section. Netstal’s testing program found these results in both juice and CSD bottles. www.netstal.com Fig. 2: Influence of different preform domes on bottle bases Fig. 3: Depiction of the measured weights of bottle sections Fig. 4: Bottle wall strength distribution Comparison of the LightBase and Cappello Design using the burst pres- sure test CCT Creative Competence Technology GmbH Idsteiner Strasse 74 D-65527 Niedernhausen, Germany
