TRADE SHOW REVIEW 29 1.5l PET bottle for highly carbonated drinks bottles. In addition to weight reduction (light-weighting), the most important variable is the use of rPET in improving the eco-balance. As a member of the RAL Quality Assurance Associations, the firm Alpla has put the words “ecologically sustain- able” on its banners. Environmental awareness and the use of renewable energies as well as low use of materi- als and minimising transport are some of the factors with which the company works. Mr Tomas Hromjak summarises: “At Alpla, sustainability means integrat- ing into the business and core strategy, social, ecological and ethical concerns as well as human rights issues. The ultimate goal is a resource-effi- cient production without losses of water and material, with the help of renewable energies and with sustainable and recy- clable materials all coming together in a friendly work environment.” The forum on ecological further development of PET drinks packaging was a complete success. Andreas Nor- mann: „As the word spread of our ini- tiative at the BrauBeviale, we received a lot of positive feedback, recognisable from the young and international visi- tors.” www.forum-pet.de www.alpla.com www.ral-guetezeichen.de www.wertstoff-pet.de Fig. 1: CO 2 calculator PET bottle filling (Hansa Heemann AG / Ifeu Institut) General Functional unit 1,000l Number of packaging 667 piece Filling volume 1.5l Primary packaging Weighting bottle 28g Percentage rPET 30% Weighting closure 2.1g Weighting label 0.6g Transport Transport-distance to centre of distribution 136km Climate change -20 -10 0 10 20 30 40 50 60 70 28.78 PET manufacturing 7.52 Bottle production 4.88 Manufacturing of label and closure 5.00 Manufacturing of secondary and transport packaging 1.41 Filling 12.99 Distribution 4.30 Recycling primary packaging 9.36 Recycling other and disposal during 1. life time cycle 12.22 Disposal 2. life time cycle -5.14 Credit energy 1. life time cycle -6.71 Credit energy 2. life time cycle -11.86 Credit secondary material 62.74 Net result R E A D M O R E A T W W W .
