This technology enables packaging manufacturers to create unlimited combinations of colour and gloss for packaging with a brilliant, attention-grabbing appearance. Target markets are the beverages, personal care and consumer goods industries. Colourful packaging is widely used in the beverage and per- sonal care sectors to make products stand out on shelves. “With new Impress colour concentrates, packaging manufacturers now have an outstanding option for winning consumer attention at the point-of-sale and can vary the amount of colourant and package wall thickness to create endless possibilities. In addition, these concentrates are easy to process in the polymers most commonly selected for packaging,” said Christoph Palm, vice president, general manager Color and Additives EMEA & India for Polyone. Impress metallic effect colour concentrates are formulated using an additive that adds value in terms of an ultra-glossy appearance to packaging made with semi-crystalline polymers such as PET. The addi- tive creates tiny bubbles inside the semi-crystalline resins which, when stretched during blow moulding, reflect light and shine for a high-gloss, metallic appearance. These new formulations can be processed on standard injection stretch blow moulding machinery. Internal testing has shown that pack- aging manufactured with Impress colour concentrates does not have flow lines, according to Polyone. With other metallic effect additives, these lines can appear on the surface of the part where molten plastic flow fronts meet during processing.
