U ltraviolet light can seriously undermine your product’s quality and consistency. Exposure to sunlight and artificial light sources during warehousing, distribution, retail display and post-purchase storage can degrade the color, flavor, aroma and nutritional value of food and drink products packaged in clear polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles. UV light can cause color fading and shifting, create off-flavors and aromas, and reduce the potency of products like vitamins. Such UV damage can impact profitability and brand reputation by lowering product quality and shortening shelf life. Enabling use of more natural ingredients Milliken has tackled this issue head-on by developing its ClearShield™ Colorless UV Absorber. ClearShield filters 95% of UV light at up to 390 nanometers and is effective at very low loadings, enabling the use of more highly UV-sensitive natural essences, fragrances and colorants in the packaged products. Beverages packaged in PET containers are highly susceptible to UV-related damage for different reasons. Ultraviolet light is known to affect the vitamins, citral compounds, hops and polyphenols found in milk, juice, beer, wine and tea. Such exposure typically degrades the content of these beneficial ingredients, which can result in an off-taste. Supporting the ‘Clean Label’ movement Consumers today clearly desire more natural, recognizable ingredients. The term “clean label” is widely used to describe this trend, and can mean all-natural or organic ingredients, no artificial preservatives and colors, and the elimination of hormones and antibiotics.
