The recent system designed for a major preform manufacturer in the beverage sector demonstrates how advanced engineering and technology can help to facilitate the circular economy. The system designed by PET Solutions is based on centralised material management and features six external silos of 250m³, each connected to a fully automated conveying network. Material flow is controlled by PLCs equipped with an intuitive interface and advanced supervision tools to enable effective traceability, order, and safety. Material handling takes place on technical mezzanines designed to optimise space usage and simplify maintenance. The machines are designed for maximum hygiene, flexibility and fast production changeovers. DRV technology The DRV series feature a multipatented continuous vacuum drying technology, developed in-house by PET Solutions. The system is specifically designed to tackle rPET challenges residual moisture, contaminants, material thermal history, and temperature sensitivity. The vacuum process enables deep and uniform drying, which, PET Solutions says, drastically reduces the material’s residence time at high temperatures and thus avoids degradation, yellowing or pellet sticking. The system operates through four sequential hoppers. The first undertakes pre-heating and removes surface moisture. The second brings the resin to optimal temperature for the vacuum phase. The third hopper creates a low-pressure environment that allows residual moisture to evaporate and helps remove contaminants. The fourth fine-tunes the temperature before feeding the resin to injection moulding machines. Fast changeovers and reduced energy consumption The DRV system allows for a complete material change in just 2 h - 65% faster than traditional systems, says the company. Moisture is extracted by vacuum pumps, which eliminates desiccants or regenerations. Condensable compounds are removed through vacuum, making condensers unnecessary. With only one filter and no heat exchangers or molecular sieves, a self-cleaning system and easy component access, maintenance is minimised. Intelligent regulation of vacuum and temperature through proprietary software is claimed to optimise consumption and maximise efficiency. PET Solutions claims over 24% energy savings. Valves, sensors, alarms, and interlocks are integrated for safe operation, which is managed by touchscreen control. Modular design Its ‘brick style’ modularity means that each hopper can operate independently. The ability to process two different materials simultaneously translates into greater productivity. Hoppers can be installed vertically or horizontally and on different levels. The system can thus be adapted to existing plant structures. Production capacity can be expanded or new materials introduced simply by adding modules to the system, with no need for redesign. The DRV has been designed to ensure stable and homogeneous drying, avoiding common issues such as polymer degradation, the formation of volatile compounds or reduced performance of the final product.
