Sidel is offering complete and modular PET packaging solutions, including people, services and equipment.

With 30,000 machines installed in more than 190 nations,the company's fields of activities are filling equipment(for over 80 years), preform and bottle production lines (or more than 50 years) and labeling (for more than 35 years). Sidel has 40 years of aseptic packaging expertise, and were one of the first companies to introduce PET bottles to the beverage industry over 30 years ago.

Part of Tetra Laval group and headquartered in Switzerland, Sidel has over 50 office locations, 13 production sites and 7 training centres worldwide and 5,400 employees worldwide.

Liquid filling

Sidel covers the entire process chain for liquid filling. The portfolio includes:

Equipment training and maintenance

Sidel runs seven training facilities in France, Italy, Mexico, Brazil, USA, Malaysia and China. They offer seminars and technical trainings in different sectors such as filling technologies, maintenance and product applications. The company also took part in the European project "SKILLS, Multimodal Interfaces for Capturing and Transfer of Skills", funded by the European Framework Programme IST FP6. Sidel’s contribution to the five-year project phase was to test and develop virtual and augmented reality platforms for industrial training.The company has also developed individual, customer-orientated on-the-job training and offers maintenance services on-site.

History

1850 THE START IN PARMA: Simonazzi Workshops, specialised in mechanical farm equipment, is founded in Parma, Italy by Pompeo Simonazzi, an entrepreneurial blacksmith and iron worker who sees an opportunity to offer his skills to local farmers

1910 BEVERAGES: The Simonazzi company starts manufacturing equipment for processing preserves and dairy products

1930s FILLING: Simonazzi launches its first dosing units for canning preserves and its first equipment for wine cellars

1940s Manufacturing begins for small machines to bottle wine

1950s Simonazzi's bottling activities are extended to include other liquid foods such as beer, mineral water, soft drinks, fruit juices, spirits, oils and vinegars

1959 The Lesieur Group, then Europe's number one oilseed produce, starts investigating the use of plastic packaging

1961 The Lesieur Group forms its 'Lightweight Packages' division in Le Havre, France

1962 BLOWING: The Lightweight Packages division develops the first plastic bottles for oil products, using polyvinyl chloride (PVC)

1965 SIDEL IS FOUNDED IN LE HAVRE: Sidel is founded in Le Havre by Georges Lesieur et ses Fils, evolving from the Lesieur Group's former Lightweight Packages division. The company's name is an acronym resulting from the original French title 'Société Industrielle Des Emballages Légers, or 'Industrial Company of Light Packaging'

1970s COMPLETE LINES: Simonazzi produces its first Eurostar filler for beverages, complementing its full portfolio of equipment for complete lines capable of high output speeds of water, carbonated soft drinks and beer

1972 Sidel becomes fully owned by the Saint-Gobain-Point-a-Mousson Group, which had until now shared ownership with the Lesieur Group

1973 ASEPTIC PACKING

 	Remy introduces the world's first aseptic filling technology for ultra-high temperature (UHT) milk in HDPE bottles

1976 LABELLING

 	The Alfa company is created in Mantova specialising in in-line and rotary labelling machines for cold glue and self-adhesive applications

1978 Sidel introduces bi-orientation technology for PVC bottles, producing 65 gram bottles in a continuous cycle for carbonated soft drinks

1980 PET

 	Sidel introduces the world's first SBO commercial production solution to package beverages in PET, with the SBO blower for carbonated soft drinks, with an output rate of 3,600 bottles per hour and 360 bottles per mould. The world's first-ever PET bottles for beverages start being produced

1981 Alfa introduces hot-melt labelling machines

1982 Simonazzi introduces the first filler in the world dedicated to PET, with neck handling

1984 The world's fastest beverage production line achieves 15,000 bottles per hour with an SBO 24

1985 FIRST PET BOTTLE FOR STILL WATER: Sidel develops the first-ever PET bottle for still water 1986 HOT FILL: Sidel invents heat-resistant (HR) technology for the packaging of juices, isotonics and teas for the first time in hotfill and pasteurisable PET bottles 1987 An employee buy-out sees Sidel become fully independent

1989 BLOWING: The world's fastest blower, a Sidel SBO 40 producing 36,000 bottles per hour, crosses the Atlantic to run in a US customer's plant. Sidel also starts exploring the filling of packages, with the takeover of Etablissements Ronchard, a small French company that designs and builds filling machines for all kinds of liquids. In the same year Alfa launches its high-speed labelling machines.

1990 Simonazzi acquires various companies including labeller-manufacturer Alfa and its manufacturing facilities in Mantova, Italy

1993 Sidel is publicly listed on the Paris stock exchange. In the same year it opens its first office in Beijing and launches the first blower capable of producing PET jars with wide mouths

1994 Sidel introduces its preferential heating process, which enables the production of complex shapes and 'flat' PET bottles for home and personal care products

1995 BLOWING: Sidel installs a SBO 48/38 Series1 blower equipped with dual-cavity moulds, capable of producing 50,000 bottles per hour. The company also purchases Hema Technologies, another French manufacturer of filling machines

1996 END OF LINE CAPABILITIES FOR COMPLETE LINE SOLUTIONS: Sidel acquires filling and packing company Remy and Cermex, a company specialising in end-of-line packing and palletisation, to strengthen its complete line capabilities. 1997 COMBI: Sidel introduces the world's first integrated blow-fill-cap solution, the Sidel Combi, to beverage producers globally, initially for still water. This follows the purchase in the same year of Alsim, a Parma-based Italian manufacturer of filling machines, and Gebo, a global specialist in line design, integration and conveyors, to further strengthen its complete line expertise. At the same time, Simonazzi introduces the Rollquattro, an advanced, high-speed labelling machine for PET containers, with output rates of up to 60,000bph

1998 Sidel launches its second generation of blowers, the SBO Series 2, with an increased output of 1,400 bottles per mould. The company also introduces the first Combi equipped with preform decontamination technology called Disis

1999 Sidel introduces its proprietary Actis (amorphous coating treatment for internal surfaces) technology for improved PET gas barrier properties resulting in extended bottle shelf-life

2002 FIRST PET BOTTLE FOR MILK: The first PET bottle for UHT milk is produced on a Sidel aseptic Combi Disis

2003 TETRA LAVAL: Sidel joins the Tetra Laval Group, becoming one of its three main industrial groups, along with Tetra Pak and De Laval

Sidel sells its first blower for packages made with polypropylene (PP), for pharmaceuticals products

2004 The first high-speed Combi is installed, producing 42,000 bottles per hour

2005 SIMONAZZI MERGER: Simonazzi joins the Tetra Laval Group and merges with Sidel to create a company capable of providing complete liquid-packaging solutions for the beverage industry worldwide. The newly enlarged Sidel launches its third generation of blowers, the SBO Universal, capable of producing 1,800 bottles per mould per hour, and also its new no-contact flow-meter fillers for water (FMw) and for milk and liquid dairy products (FMm)

2006 PREDIS: Sidel launches Predis, a unique dry preform decontamination system which uses no water and minimal chemicals; its Rollquattro Evolution labelling machine; and the SBO 34 Highspeed, which becomes the fastest blower for small formats producing 61,200 bottles per hour 2007 CAPDIS: Sidel launches Capdis, a dry decontamination system for caps which, like Predis for preforms, uses no water and minimal chemicals. In the same year Sidel introduces NoBottle, the then lightest PET bottle for still water in the world, weighing just 9.9 grams for 0.5 litres

2008 BEIJING: Sidel introduces the aseptic flow-meter filler Sensofill FMa for sensitive products and opens its manufacturing plant in Beijing, capable of producing blowers, fillers, labellers and Combis

2009 PET FOR UHT: The first PET bottle without aluminium foil for UHT milk is bottled aseptically using a Sidel Combi Predis FMa. Sidel also launches the SL 90 labelling machine, a high-speed rotary labeller designed for self-adhesive and cold-glued labels

2010 SWITZERLAND HEADQUARTERS: Sidel relocates its headquarters from France to Switzerland, where the Tetra Laval Group and group sister company Tetra Pak are already headquartered

2010 Sidel launches its Rollsleeve labeller, a combination self-manufacturing shrink-sleeve and hot-melt rollfed machine

2011 Sidel launches a new corporate identity, promising to give its customers 'A Better Match', the tailored solution that caters precisely to their needs. In the same year, the world's fastest beverage production line achieves 72,000bph with Sidel equipment

2013 SIDEL MATRIX AND RIGHTWEIGHT: Sidel Matrix, a modular liquid-packaging system comprising blowers, fillers, Combis and labellers for complete line solutions, is launched. Sidel also launches the RightWeight concept bottle for still water (7.95g for a 0.5l bottle with a 30kg top-load). Gebo Cermex is created as a group subsidiary.

2014 The world's fastest beverage production line achieves 134,000bph for water with Sidel Matrix equipment.

               Sidel launches its new Sidel Services business unit

2015 First ever Sidel PET line for milk in Brazil: Jussara differentiated its brand on the shelves by packaging milk in PET.
