Petcycle GmbH 2019: Decline in sales and progress towards sustainability
On the occasion of the company’s twentieth anniversary, the conditions of the previous year, increasing plastic bashing and the continuing individualisation of brand packaging have clouded the balance sheet of Petcycle GmbH. The operator of the petcycle pool system for beverage packaging reports an 11.8 percent decline in sales for 2019.
The circulation system for mineral water and soft drinks is used in Germany by over 65 beverage manufacturers for around 150 beverage brands. With reusable crates and single use PET bottles, Petcycle is considered one of the pioneers of recycling management and sustainable PET recycling.
At the same time, progress has been made in the past year in improving the environmental performance of the system. With a constantly high recycling rate of 99.3 percent, the average proportion of recycled PET in the bottles was increased by 9.5 percent to 61 percent.
In 2019, the entire industry has seen a decline in sales of about 5%, states Petcycle and continues that for the industry as a whole, the current, often unobjective discussion about plastic packaging and thus also about PET bottles is worrying.
