Groundbreaking inauguration of recycling plant in Indonesia
Coca-Cola Amatil Indonesia (Amatil Indonesia) and Dynapack Asia announced the construction of a 20,000 square meter Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) recycling facility located in Bekasi, West Java. The newest investment valued at AUD 50.51 million (IDR 556.2 billion) will enable the collaboration of Amatil Indonesia and Dynapack Asia to create a closed loop plastic packaging supply chain by producing food and beverage safe plastic pellets made from post-consumer plastic bottles. During the groundbreaking ceremony, Amatil Indonesia dan Dynapack Asia introduced PT Amandina Bumi Nusantara and Mahija Parahita Nusantara with roles as:
• PT Amandina Bumi Nusantara – the entity which will run that state-of-the-art rPET facility, leading the transformation process of low-quality PET waste back to virgin-quality, food-grade PET using the latest renewable technology;
• Mahija Parahita Nusantara – the non – profit foundation which will support collection centers management, ensuring the fulfillment of human rights and regulation in the waste collection supply chain, execute activities to improve the welfare of waste pickers and communities, as well as conducting research and development on recyclability improvement and other opportunities related to PET utilisation and plastic collection.
On the groundbreaking inauguration of the recycling plant, Coca-Cola Amatil Indonesia President Director Kadir Gunduz shared that the collaboration between Amatil Indonesia and Dynapack Asia is one of Amatil Indonesia’s concrete efforts in realising its recent 2020-2040 Sustainability Ambitions. “Over the years, not only have we continued making massive investments in our technology, our Supply Chain capacity and our people safety & capabilities, but we are also making conscious decisions to invest in sustainable packaging, renewable energy, water management and the wellbeing of our consumers and communities,” said Mr Gunduz. “The facility will start its operation in 2022 and has the capacity to reduce the amount of new plastic resin companies use by an estimated 25,000 tons each year and help stimulate the recycling industry and accelerate the improvement in recycling rate. As part of the steering board at NPAP (National Plastic Action Partnership), we are committed to support Indonesia’s National Action Plan in achieving a 70% reduction in the nation’s marine plastic debris by 2025,” said Mr Gunduz.
Managing Director of Coca-Cola Amatil Group Alison Watkins who attended the event virtually added that sustainability has always been an integral part and long-term commitment of Amatil Group’s business. “Today’s inauguration brings us closer to one of our 10 priority ambitions, closing the loop on packaging by 2030, by building important partnership with Dynapack Asia, who has been a long-term partner to our business in Indonesia. We are hoping this partnership can open million more possibilities for us to conquer,” said Mrs Watkins.
President Director of the newly found entity PT Amandina Bumi Nusantara Emmeline Hambali relayed her hopes and excitement to start working together with multiple parties in Indonesia in finding various solutions and making concrete efforts in the reduction of plastic waste negative impacts to the environment.
“In Amandina, we believe that only through joint action that we could create a significant positive impact. Through this project, we hope that we could increase the usage of recycled plastic in Indonesia, so we could reduce the negative impacts of plastic waste to the environment,” explained Mrs Hambali.
Ministry of Industry Agus Gumiwang give the highest appreciation to Coca Cola Amatil Indonesia for its trying to close the gap between the industry sector and environmental sector. “I hope that this facility could always support the realization of sustainable development within circular economy implementation in the industry.”
Bekasi Regent Eka Supria Atmaja represented by Bekasi’s Head of Industry Department Effendi also relayed his gratitude towards Amatil Indonesia and Dynapack Asia’s commitment towards becoming a solution in post-consumption plastic packaging management within circular economy framework. “To solve this problem, both consumers and producers need to join hands in providing solution. Each has their own roles in providing solution. One of which is showcased by Coca Cola Amatil Indonesia and Dynapack Asia, which provide plastic bottle recycling,” said Mr Efendi.
Amatil Indonesia continues to strengthen its commitment to reduce plastic usage, among others with light-weighting PET bottles that successfully reduced 28.5% plastic content since 2014, as well as transitioning from coloured to clear bottles which are easier to recycle. Together with Dynapack Asia, Amatil Indonesia continues its support on many grassroots initiatives to help collect and recycle beverage containers including daily beach clean-up program, Bali Beach Clean-Up, which has successfully collected more than 40k tonnes of waste for more than 13 years and other similar programs.
