Origin Materials develops sustainable PET bottle closures for “All PET Mono-Material” bottle and closure solutions

Origin Materials, Inc., a leading carbon negative materials company, announced today that it has developed “All-PET” bottle closures that are made from 100% recycled PET from cap to bottle. According to the company, these PET closures can be produced from a wide variety of PET feedstocks, and in addition to rPET, for example, can also be produced from its own 100% bio-based, carbon-negative vPET. PET would offer a better oxygen and CO2 barrier than the usual closure plastics HDPE and PP.

The process, for which the company has applied for a patent, is intended to support the production of PET mono-material products and thus improve recyclability. Origin Materials’ innovation is expected to address a global market for closures worth about $65 billion, growing to $96 billion by 2030. The EU’s tethered cap regulations, which require caps to remain attached to the bottle from 2024 onwards for waste prevention reasons, could further boost demand for the company’s cap development. While conventional tethered caps would still have to be separated from the PET bottles during the recycling process, Origin Material’s PET caps could simply and easily be recycled along with the PET stream.
