Launch of Thailand’s first beverage bottle made from 100% rPET
The joint venture between Alpla and PTT Global Chemical (GC) is launching Thailand’s first food-grade rPET, which is already being used for the first 100% rPET bottles nationwide. Pepsi and Mineré are the first beverage brands in the market to use recycler Envicco’s PCR material for their PET bottles. Partners Alpla and PTT Global Chemical (GC) inaugurated the recycling plant in Rayong province in September 2022. The first certification of food-grade rPET in Thailand by the national FDA and the launch of the first 100% rPET bottles now mark the next milestone in the joint venture’s collaboration with the local beverage industry.
With an annual production capacity of 30,000 tonnes of rPET and 15,000 tonnes of recycled rHDPE, Envicco is one of the largest recyclers of its kind in the whole of Asia. According to Alpla, the mechanical recycling process meets all quality, safety and efficiency criteria for the production of food-grade PCR material. The material, called “Inno Eco”, was already certified by the FDA before it was approved by the Thai authorities.
The product launches by Pepsi and Mineré are accompanied by high-visibility campaigns for collection and recycling. These campaigns aim to educate the Thai population about the benefits of sustainable packaging solutions. Suntory PepsiCo Beverage Thailand, in partnership with the Property Management of Chulalongkorn University (PMCU) Bangkok, has launched the campaign “Fizzy Consciousness to Change the World. Nestlé, in collaboration with the supermarket chain 7-Eleven and GC’s waste management platform Youturn, promotes the motto “Bottle made from Bottles” for the mineral water brand Mineré.
