Closure solutions for modern PET packaging

Meeting consumer demands

For decades, BERICAP has been a trusted partner in high quality plastic and aluminium closures for the global beverage, food, and industrial sectors. Headquartered in Germany, the family-owned company operates 30 production sites worldwide. Its activities are supported by specialised R&D centres, an in-house mould shop, and collaboration with customers on product and process development.

As BERICAP approaches its 100th anniversary in 2026, the milestone highlights a long-standing commitment to combining technical expertise with innovation, as recent developments demonstrate. With new concepts for sport caps, RefPET bottles and edible oil applications, BERICAP addresses evolving market needs from convenience to material reduction and recyclability.

Sport caps: safety, performance, and on-the-go convenience

As demand for convenient, mobile drinking solutions continues to grow, the company has developed and fully industrialised a range of sport caps for beverage brands, bottlers and private label manufacturers. The portfolio covers all relevant neck finishes, including the lightweight GME 30.40.

Designed for one-handed operation, all BERICAP sport caps feature a 180-degree opening angle and a high flow rate, for a comfortable and intuitive drinking experience on-the-go.

The range includes the one-piece Biarritz cap, offering a modern design and easy handling, and the two-piece premium Monet cap, which incorporates a contrasting tamper-evidence ring and a window that clearly indicates whether the bottle has been opened. Both models are produced in mono material HDPE to ensure efficient recycling within PET streams and are suitable for dry and wet aseptic filling.

Together, the new Biarritz and Monet designs enhance the Crystal and Thump Up models, forming a comprehensive sport cap lineup. Safety is embedded throughout the entire line, with all models meeting BSDA (British Soft Drinks Association) child safety standards to prevent loose parts. For additional functionality, the silicone free BERICAP valve can be integrated into selected designs. By focusing on convenience, production flexibility and recyclability, the company offers a sport-cap range that meets the expectations of modern beverage brands.

RefPET solutions: enabling circularity in refillable packaging

Refillable PET bottles (RefPET) play an important role in circular beverage packaging, especially in markets such as Germany. Unlike single use PET, RefPET bottles are designed to withstand numerous cycles of collection, washing, refilling, and recapping – most commonly in the mineral water and CSD segment. These repeated processes place specific and demanding requirements on the closure system.

A key requirement is the tamper evidence band. For RefPET bottles, the band must remain attached to the closure without locking below the neck’s clip in ring, as it typically does on single use bottles. If the tamper evidence band stays on the bottle after opening, the container cannot be refilled or securely reclosed, disrupting the entire returnable system.

Because a bottle neck can change slightly over its lifetime due to repeated washing and handling, RefPET bottles typically rely on two-piece closures. The combination of a plastic closure shell and a liner – which is either flexible and free rotating or in-shell moulded and fix – helps compensate for slight damages and scratches at the neck which might occur during processing and ensures a consistent seal. Reinforced designs, optimised liner materials and tailored tamper evidence concepts, such as slit or moulded bands, contribute to reliable performance, even on high-speed filling lines.

BERICAP offers a broad portfolio of RefPET closures, ranging from lightweight designs to diverse liner options and customisable branding features such as embossing and printing. These engineered solutions support the rising importance of refillable packaging under evolving EU regulations (PPWR).

Deposit System explained for mineral water in RefPET bottles

Mineral water in RefPET bottles is typically sold in reusable plastic crates. After use, consumers return the entire crate to the retailer and receive their deposit back, often via reverse vending machines. The collected crates are sent to the mineral water producer, where the bottles are removed, placed on a conveyor line and thoroughly washed before they re enter the filling and capping cycle.

Efficient by design: sustainable closure concepts for edible oil closures

With the EVO edition, BERICAP introduces a new generation of closures for edible oils, sauces, soy products and vinegars – oriented toward the market’s growing demand for sustainability, cost efficiency and user-friendly design. The platform is built entirely from PE, allowing for easy recycling.

An integrated tethered tamper evidence feature enhances product protection while preventing loose components and littering. At the same time, the “right weight” design achieves the balance of minimised material use with the reliable performance and safety needed for transport, storage and daily handling.

The EVO edition also considers consumer experience. Different pouring options, ranging from controlled dispensing to free-flow formats, support adaptation to regional preferences and product characteristics.

Material efficiency, however, starts with the neck. Across different industry segments, lightweight neck finishes are becoming the new standard. In the edible oil segment, the PET 26/21 neck is becoming increasingly established: it maintains the familiar inner diameter as used in the PET 29/21 neck, while enabling significant material savings at both the neck and closure. In this evolving environment, BERICAP provides closure concepts compatible with various neck finishes to accommodate ongoing changes in packaging standards.

Looking ahead

BERICAP applies its engineering expertise to address industry requirements such as sustainability, regulatory compliance, and evolving consumer expectations, with a focus on reliable performance, product safety, and consistent quality.
