One material, one package

Advancing sustainability with all-PET closures and bottle

As sustainability targets accelerate across the beverage industry, packaging producers and brand owners face growing pressure to simplify materials, improve recyclability, and deliver performance without compromise. Husky’s HyCAP SecuRE+ technology addresses these requirements by enabling mono-material packaging, pairing PET closures with PET bottles.

This single material approach is claimed to eliminate contamination from the recycling stream that is possible with traditional multi-material systems where PET bottles use HDPE or PP closures. As closures can account for up to 15% of package weight, all-PET solutions are reported to improve recycled PET bale yield, a factor gaining importance in the growing beverage markets across the Middle East and Africa (MEA).

Enhanced security

HyCAP SecuRE+ features a tamper-evident design that, according to Husky, improves consumer security while improving line performance. The tamper-evident band forms during moulding, eliminating post-mould slitting for dust-free manufacturing and reduced contamination risk.

The company states that the design allows stress-free capping, enabling the tamper-evident band to pass over pilfer-proof features without bridge stress. This is said to result in improved capping reliability, lower reject rates and more consistent performance on high-speed beverage lines.

PET’s higher rigidity enables lightweighting at the dispensing system level, while its molecular structure provides improved barrier properties that can extend shelf life for oxygen-sensitive and carbonated beverages. This is particularly crucial under challenging climate conditions such as those found in parts of the MEA region.

The technology is described as fully compatible with existing CETIE standard neck finishes, allowing integration without modifications to bottle designs.

As circular economy initiatives gain momentum across the region, mono-material PET packaging concepts are being positioned as an approach to simplifying recycling streams and increasing rPET yields, while maintaining efficiency, safety and consumer functionality.
