VILSA becomes first German beverage producer with validated net-zero targets
VILSA reports to be the first German beverage manufacturer to set science-based climate targets and have them validated under the Science Based Targets initiative’s (SBTi) Net-Zero Standard. Since joining the SBTi in 2023, VILSA has worked consistently to define and confirm its climate targets on a scientific basis.
The company has been using 100% renewable electricity at its Bruchhausen-Vilsen headquarters since 2018 and has reduced site-related production emissions per filling by around 70% between 2010 and 2024.
With SBTi validation, the VILSA Group commits to reducing its greenhouse-gas emissions across the entire value chain to net zero by 2050 at the latest – aligned with the Paris Agreement’s 1.5 °C pathway.
The Science Based Targets initiative is a global organisation supporting companies in setting science-based climate targets. It develops standards, tools and guidance that enable companies to define targets consistent with limiting global warming to 1.5 °C. Companies joining the initiative commit to developing ambitious climate targets and submitting them for SBTi validation, as well as regularly reporting on progress. The clear focus is on emissions reduction and long-term sustainability to help accelerate urgently needed climate-mitigation measures.
Targets in detail
- Scopes 1 and 2: Emissions to be reduced by 42% by 2030 and by 90% by 2050.
- Scope 2: Share of renewable electricity to increase from 95.86% in 2022 to 100% by 2030.
- Scope 3: Value-chain emissions to be reduced by 25% by 2030 and by 90% by 2050.
Concrete measures for a climate-neutral future
To achieve these goals, VILSA is implementing targeted measures in production, packaging and logistics. These include packaging solutions such as the VILSA NIX-PACK to reduce plastic use, an increased share of recycled materials, energy-efficiency measures, an in-house biogas-powered combined heat and power plant, and the expansion of e-truck deployment and charging infrastructure. The full set of short- and long-term SBTi-validated targets of the VILSA Group is available on the VILSA website (PDF) and on the SBTi website.
