"COLOURANTS / ADDITIVES 11 PETplanet Insider    Vol. 17 If we take the example of beer, most types are sensitive to UV radiation and visible light up to 510nm – this results in the ‘Lightstruck’ effect or ‘Skunked flavour.’ Both UV light and visible light induce a series of reactions that eventually produce 3-methylbut-2-ene-1-thiol (3-MBT) out of the hop components. 3-MBT has an extremely low taste threshold (4 parts-per-trillion), which means that the smallest amount in beer makes its presence felt (Chem. Eur. J., 2001, 7: 4553– 4561; Cerevisia, 2008, 33(3):133-144). The good news is that proper light protection in combination with an attractive colour makes a big difference for product integrity (as well as brand appeal). A regular amber PET bottle with no light protection may reduce 3-MBT formation to some extent. However, a specifically formulated colourant for PET with light protection above 510nm can reduce 3-MBT formation up to 90%. Many formulations from Holland Colours are also said to be compatible with monolayer oxygen barrier additives, providing the ultimate combination of product protection and attractive colour. An increasing number of products such as beer, juices, milk, energy drinks and vitamin-enhanced beverages, as well as household cleaners and dishwashing liquids are being packaged in PET. This raises the question of how best to protect them. Holland Colours’ LightGuard series claims to provide an answer. Many of the products being packaged in PET – or considered for PET packaging – contain colour, flavour, nutritional or functional components that need to be protected against UV radiation and light from both sunlight and fluorescent lighting in stores. Product integrity – and, ultimately, brand integrity and reputation – depend on giving proper care to preventing the content from deteriorating through exposure to UV and light. That has traditionally been a weakness of transparent PET. Building UV and light protection into the PET package itself offers several advantages beyond simply keeping products fresher for longer. Among these benefits is increased flexibility in formulating with components that are expected to be somewhat sensitive but whose matrix effects are unknown. It also makes it possible to eliminate the use of UV stabilisers in the product itself. This in turn allows brands to increase the percentage of natural components without having to add chemical UV stabilisers to the formulation. In addition, the UV protection can be optimised in the container wall instead of in the product, independent from product formulation issues or package design changes. This is where Holland Colours’ LightGuard series comes in. The product integrity challenge The backstory to the problem is that in PET packaging terms, the hazardous UV and light spectrum ranges from 320 to around 550nm, depending on product composition and shelf life expectations. PET itself only absorbs light up to 320nm, which means PET bottles need additional UV and light protection if they are to be used to contain light-sensitive products. Many commercially available UV absorbers, however, only extend the level of protection to 370nm. This is sufficient for many products. Several common colourants and vitamins, for example, appear to be quite stable when tested in isolation with this level of protection. But there are many other components that, when used in complex formulations, show an increased sensitivity due to matrix effects. In other words, components that are otherwise stable to UV and light can be affected by exposure due to interaction with less stable components. They then create an unexpected negative influence on another component that in turn leads to decreased product integrity. Trial and error or guaranteed performance The result of this can be unexpected losses in functionality and colour. This leads to a shorter product shelf life for sensitive products. Because every formulation can behave differently, extensive testing is required to determine each product’s exact and individual UV protection requirements. This is both very time-consuming and expensive, which means that for complex products, it is simpler and more secure to skip the testing altogether and go for a product that blocks all radiation all the way up to 400nm, thereby blocking all UV radiation while maintaining a colourless transparent bottle. "TRADE SHOW REVIEW 35 PETplanet Insider    Vol. 17    No. 12/16    petpla.net Ultralight PET preforms Sipa, the PET container production technologies specialist, produced two types of preforms, one weighting 8.9g and the other 21.8g to show the flexibility of its new Xtreme injection-compression moulding technology at the K 2016 show. The Xtreme injection-compression moulding system is different from other injection-compression systems: Preform moulds in blocks of three cavities are mounted on a high-speed carousel, an extruder delivers melt to dosing devices mounted under the moulds. Xtreme produce preforms that are up to 10% lighter than the lightest injection moulded preform without losing any key properties when blown into the bottle. It is possible to make a preform for a 500ml bottle weighing a mere 6g. Injection-compression moulding makes it possible to use lower injection pressures and lower clamp forces. With less stress being put on the melt, acetaldehyde (AA) levels are reduced by around 40%. The drop in intrinsic viscosity, IV, is 70% less than in injection moulding. The Xtreme injection-compression is available for down and upstream line integration. For upstream integration Sipa has partnered with Erema, specialist in recycling technology, to develop Xtreme Renew, an integrated system for inline production of food contact approved preforms starting from 100% postconsumer PET flakes without the need of pre-drying. The impulse to buy is almost always driven by subconscious emotions, especially for consumer items. And there is no design element more suited to influence emotion than colour. Colour trends mirror the spirit of the times and attitude of life and are thus constantly changing. Experienced specialists are continuously monitoring these trends. International colour studies and trend reports are evaluated regularly in order to translate emerging global colour trends for customers’ applications. Based on these observations, colourists and technicians develop new and contemporary colour masterbatch collections for plastics. Having observed the major trends running through modern life and society, specialists came up with a high gloss metallic finish for PET bottles in 2017. Taking advantage of this colour trend, packaging manufacturers now have the opportunity to give their products more impact on the shelf. The metallic gloss effect is achieved during the production process: additives create tiny bubbles inside the semi-crystalline resins which, when stretched during blow moulding, reflect light and shine to create a high-gloss, metallic appearance. Whilst the metallic effect is a major factor at the POS, the PET bottle must also serve an important functional purpose, namely to hold and protect the contents. The first priority is to protect the product from light. There are different kinds of light which could irradiate into the package, for example sunlight or fluorescent store light. A UV barrier is needed to protect and preserve the shelf life of the product. Various barrier solutions are available, and some of them are described in the Holland Colours and Sukano articles. Significant new challenges are arising for the PET industry: for example, how to deal with the rPET when masterbatches are added. When first used, the pre-perforated sleeve label must be partially removed in order to be able to take off the green protective cap and then open the screwed-on hinged cap on the bottle opening. The wide range of different innovations and latest developments attracted numerous visitors to the Gneuss booth.International visitors were especially attracted by the Gneuss recycling systems on display, based on the proven Gneuss MRS extruder together with the optional liquid phase IV booster Jump, which enables waste to be directly reintroduced into the production process. This new, add-on system is coupled directly to the extrusion unit and ensures accurate IV boosting with its sophisticated process for increasing the molecule chain lengths and therefore the IV. Compared with conventional SSP systems, the Jump offers a compact alternative. At the “K”, Gneuss presented speciallydeveloped product configurators. These permit complete lines to be individually tailored and planned to the customer´s individual requirements. The visitors´ attention was not only attracted by the Gneuss extrusion lines for PET industrial, post- consumer recycling and for thermoforming sheet but also by the high-performance Gneuss Rotary Melt Filtration Systems for a wide range of polymers and applications. A transparent PET bottle, with a front-side non-label look, shows the oil pearls perfectly and a self-adhesive label on the back describes the product and how to use it. The strategy for both applications was slightly different. Let us look at water first.  The diameter was reduced from 30 to 25.84mm  The height was reduced from 16.81 to 12mm  The wall thickness was reduced from 1.4 to between 1.05 and 1.2mm. (Drawing courtesy of Bericap) This resulted in a weight reduction of the bottle neck from around 4g (as measured to the bottom of the transfer ring) to about 2g. These numbers differ slightly between manufacturers but, nevertheless, show an approximate and astounding 50% weight reduction. It is little wonder that many companies jumped on this opportunity to save substantial amounts of money. Every hundred million bottles thus produced save 200,000kg (440,000lb) of resin, and although the new preform tooling required does not come cheap, payback time is short. Figure 4.44 These 26mm caps for water bottles weigh just 1g. 4.10.2 Lighter caps The new necks require new caps, and designers have used the opportunity to go beyond just fitting a cap on a new neck. Instead, they have pushed the limits of what can be injection or compression moulded and have engineered caps that are truly as light as can be, especially for water. The new water cap features a wall thickness as low as 0.95mm and weighs in just under 1g, down from 1.85g of the tall 30/25 cap (figs 4.45 and 4.46). The requirements for CSD caps are significantly higher as the caps have to withstand the significant internal pressure of the carbonated contents. The bigger the container the higher the proportion of PET. In the domain of 2 litre containers, for example, PET totally rules the roost. With smaller containers, glass and cans are also used depending on local market conditions. Every so often, there were also attempts to introduce PET for smaller packaging sizes. In the water sector, this proved wholly successful, but for soft drinks, success was much more limited. There are two main reasons for this: the first is emotional. When I am out and about, I drink single-serve. By contrast, metal or glass packaging feels cold and thus refreshing. The second reason is technological. The smaller the container, the greater the ratio of surface to volume and the quicker the CO 2 escapes with PET. There are also “political” reasons: in some countries the lobbying for glass or reusable containers is so strong that PET loses out. In India, Coca Cola has now taken the plunge and introduced the 250ml PET coke bottle on a large scale. Emotionally, CC is counting on the light packaging being seen as a life-style choice; technologically, they are counteracting the loss of CO 2 with the internal coating of Plasmax by KHS. It will be interesting to see how the Indian consumer reacts to the small PET bottle, as traditionally the reusable glass bottle is very cheap and popular. Meanwhile, the can is also competing for the favour of consumers. There is probably no market in the world more difficult to introduce such a product. But then I recall something that Prof Dr Johann Grabenweger, Chief Executive Manager for Sales and Service KHS said to me in an interview: “If the project is successful in India, it will be successful anywhere in the world.“ And I can only agree with this. A newly revised version is reissued under the Elsevier imprint. 4.9.4 Mould closing and opening times In terms of producing closures, the mould opening as well as closing times are nonproductive, which means that during these times nothing is produced. However, in order to achieve maximum productivity through the shortest possible cycle time, at least the ejector movements should be timed to happen parallel to the mould opening as well as mould closing movements. 4.9.5 Ejection time and mould opening stroke Ejection time is mould as well as product related. The heavier the product design, the faster the caps drop to clear the horizontal bottom mould line. In a perfectly timed moulding process, the ejection movement starts early in the beginning of the mould opening stroke. The speed of the ejector forward movement has to be adjusted in order to achieve a stable part ejection, without any caps touching one of the mould parting lines. The ejector return position is supposed to be reached before the mould opening stroke end point has been reached. 4.9.6 Plasticising Preferably, plasticising starts with the beginning of cooling time and ends before mould closing is completed. Due to today’s need for higher output and increased efficiency, the mould cavitation increases together with the number of machine cycles per minute. As a direct result of increased number of cavitations, the IM machine plasticising capacity has to become more powerful and be able to provide the required melted plastic resin in a much shorter time than years ago. As a matter of fact, today’s plasticising units limit further cycle time improvements in most of the cases. 4.9.7 Delay times Many a times machine setters optimise the moulding process by including delay times at the end of the cycle. These times have to be minimised, if not eliminated, in order to obtain the best possible process providing maximum output. 4.9.8 Air blast Depending on the closure design, air blast systems in the core area help to adjust the closures visual as well as physical properties. Better ejection due to the air blast system will be a second improvement gained. To achieve good-quality products, the airflow as well as pressure has to be adjustable accordingly. "TRADE SHOW REVIEW 32 PETplanet Insider    Vol. 17    No. 12/16    petpla.net Amut introduces the Turbo washer Purification of inorganic and fine pollutants by Gabriele Kosmehl Anthony Georges, President of Amut North America, in front of the Turbo washer model TW500 at Amut’s booth at K 2016 Shortly before the K, the American Association of Plastics Recyclers, Napcor, published the latest PET-recycling figures. The report cites a 2015 United States recycling rate of 30.1% for PET bottles, a further slight decrease from the 31% reported the year before and joining a trend of a slight year-on-year decrease in the U.S. PET bottle collection volumes. In contrast, the volume of PET bottles in the marketplace and potentially available for recycling increased. These figures must certainly suggest that suitable collection systems have not been established everywhere and that the PET bottles are often put in with household waste, which makes recycling more difficult. The recycling division of the Italian machine manufacturer Amut reacted to the worsening soiled state of bottles to be recycled by developing the Turbo washer, which permits a particularly intensive cleaning process. “When PET bottles in the USA are sent to recycling, there is a very high degree of soiling” explains Anthony Georges, President of Amut North America. “Because in many cases the bottles have to be sorted from the household waste, the PET items contain splinters of glass and all sorts of inorganic impurities. The level of dirt is so high that in the end, out of the 12-15t of post-consumer bales sent for recycling, only 6t high-quality PET fibres can be reclaimed.“ The Turbo washer in the recycling chain The Turbo washer is integrated in the recycling chain between the wet grinding and the friction washing. The first step in the recycling chain is the de-labeller, which in the cleaning process can almost completely remove PVC or PETG full body sleeve labels in the dry cleaning process. Depending on the type, 1,000g bottles/hour (NIR process) or up to 6,000kg bottles/hour can be processed. This is followed by whole bottle washing, before they are crushed in the wet grinding process. Then the newly-developed Turbo washer steps in: it performs an important washing action in purifying the plastic flakes from inorganic and fine pollutants using centrifugal force. During the centrifugal process dirty water, sand, paper fibres and soil flow through the basket holes, whereas the flakes are retained. “The smallest bits of dirt can also be removed using the Turbo washer,” Georges reports and goes on: “The requirement was the elimination of the very fine pollutants by a filtration device, which in places is smaller than the size of a human hair. We can now filter out pollutants 10μm without any problems”. The machine is used both for washing the flakes coming from the wet grinder and for intensive rinsing of the flakes after a strong washing process with detergents. After this comes more treatment in the friction washer, before the flakes, after a final rinse, run through the complete cleaning process. The entire cleaning procedure is possible in the closed-loop water system, which requires no fresh water input except for the final rinse. This year, the theme of ecological further development of PET drinks packaging was discussed and initiatives were put forward. The organisers of the forum are old acquaintances and come together regularly to present their joint concerns, to advertise their initiatives and to report on their positive developments: Dr Isabell Schmidt, Head of the Forum PET for IK Industry Association for Plastic Packaging, Mrs Stefanie Sabet, Head of the Federal Union for the German Nutrition Industry, as well as the RAL, represented by Mrs Irina Bremerstein, managing director of RAL and Mr Andreas Normann, Chair of the RAL Board of Directors. The team of speakers was strengthened by Benedikt Kauertz from the Ifeu Institute in Heidelberg, Germany who explained the PET bottle eco-balance and Mr Tomas Hromjak, as a representative for the Alpla company, who spoke about sustainability at Alpla. “When it comes to recycling, PET drinks packaging proves to have a peak figure compared to other types of packaging” says Dr Isabell Schmidt, Head of the Forum PET for IK Industry Association for Plastic Packaging. In particular, the non-refillable PET bottles with a deposit could be slightly increased from the already high recycling level of 97.2%, which was the figure achieved during the study in 2013 when they were issued for the first time. In 2015 a recycling quota of 97.9% was achieved. High return levels keep the materials cycle healthy 98.8% of the non-refillable PET drinks packaging with a deposit were recorded, according to the study on materials collected, most of which users throw into the deposit collection boxes. Against this background, the PET Forum recommends retaining the deposit. The drinks industry has a vital joint responsibility for recycling used PET bottles. A good third (34%) of recycled material is used in the manufacture of new PET bottles. Although the price difference between new and recycled PET material has gone down since 2013, the amount of recycled PET increased. In 2015, PET drinks bottles on average used 26% recycled material whereas in 2013 this figure was still at 24%. Increased use of rPET predicted According to the study, even higher levels of rPET in the recycling process are just a question of time. It can already be seen that PET recycling levels will rise. Smaller price fluctuations would favour an increased use of rPET. In some non-refillable PET bottles, the level is already well over 55%. Despite widespread pre-conceptions about PET, the cycle of PET material occurs principally in Germany. In 2015 a good 80% of the used material was recycled nationally. The exported amounts were mainly recycled in neighbouring countries but is decreasing. Recycling plays almost no role in the Far East. These results please the RAL Gütegemeinschaft Wertstoffkette PET-Getränkeverpackungen e.V. [RAL Quality Assurance Associations materials chain for PET drinks packaging] which awards the RAL quality sign “PET recyclable material” to fillers, bottle and preform manufacturers as well as recycling companies which meet the quality and test provisions of the quality association. Andreas Normann, Chair of the RAL Board of Directors, sets out the RAL aim: “The aim of the quality association is, for drinks packaging, to close down the materials cycle for PET as the packaging material and thus increase the levels of rPET in drinks bottles. In this way, the further development of PET drinks bottles can be continually promoted, under ecological considerations, which is a positive contribution to resource efficiency and environmental and climate protection”. The requirements for members in the areas of recycled manufacture, preform production and filling mineral water and soft drinks are set and correspond to the legal requirements. Members will be checked by RAL Quality Assurance Associations regularly and anonymously in co-operation with research establishments (Fresenius/Frauenhofer Institut). Benedikt Kauertz from the Ifeu Institute in Heidelberg, an expert on life cycle assessment has, for an order from Hansa Heemann AG, developed a calculator for determining the environmental footprint of the PET bottle.  This calculator can randomly change the level of rPET in a PET bottle. The calculator produces the particular eco-balance per percentage of the rPET. This means that nearly 59% of all bottles placed in the European market have been collected for recycling in 2015, outlining an increase of 2% points compared to the 2014 collection rate. These conclusions come from the annual PCI Wood Mackenzie report on post-consumer PET collection and recycling in Europe, which has been recently published. The survey results not only reveal the success of PET collection and recycling in Europe, but also the challenges and future work the PET industry is facing. “Continuously trying to improve the growth rates in collection demonstrates the need to increase consumer awareness of and involvement in recycling, as well as improvement in collection systems and action by many Member States,” states Helen McGeough, Senior Consultant responsible for the area of recycling and sustainability in PCI Wood Mackenzie. “The value of these resources needs promoting across society, from consumer to government, to ensure it is treated in the right way throughout its life and beyond.” The report further clearly outlines the need for an improved collection and sorting system throughout Europe. “Clear bottles accounted for less than 15% of the stream, continuing the downward trend for clear bales in the total share of the available stream and highlighting the need for greater expenditure in sorting activities. The process loss rate is on an upward trend, this rising rate equates to a mounting cost to the industry and backs the calls by the industry for improved collection within the Circular Economy proposals,” explains McGeough, as reported in the study. Referring to the recycling in- and output, the report reveals a strong growth in 2015, with the average operating rate improving over 2014. The trend in the trade of bales also went in favour of the domestic reclamation industry in 2015. The deal was finalised after Amcor Rigid Plastics and Sonoco secured approval from all key regulatory bodies. Amcor Rigid Plastics intends to strengthen their customer value proposition in the pharmaceutical, personal care and speciality food segments with this acquisition as well as to enhance and expand the position with additional multi-material processing, decorating capabilities, and complementary extrusion and blow moulding assets. According to Joe Franses, Director of Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability at Coca-Cola European Partners, “This example shows how we can turn the crisis of resources into a business opportunity through close collaboration across the value chain. Businesses which can be truly innovative with the products and services they provide, optimising the resources they use and encouraging consumers to do the same, have the potential to transform our economy.” Xander van der Vlies, Sustainability Director for Avery Dennison Materials Group Europe, said that CCEP wanted to further improve Smartwater production in line with its focus on recycling, sustainability and creating a circular economy. More than 50 million bottles of Smartwater were produced in 2015. "NEWS 7 PETplanet Insider    Vol. 17    No. 12/16    petpla.net A NONCOLOUR TECHNOLOGY Cooperation between KHS and the Liquiform Group With immediate effect KHS is to cooperate with the Liquiform Group by contributing its own patents to the development of innovative moulding and filling manufacturing technology, a technique which combines two previously separate processes. The two companies have now signed a licence agreement to this effect. With their cooperation they hope to achieve a breakthrough for the new Liquiform moulding and filling manufacturing technology which in the long term is to supersede the conventional stretch blow moulding process. The KHS Group has been doing its own research into this combined technology for many years now and will contribute some of its expertise to the project. At the time of writing, beverage producers who wish to fill PET bottles first have to manufacture bottles from preforms in a stretch blow moulding process using compressed air. The blown containers are then filled with beverage at a second stage in the proceedings. Liquiform technology permits bottles to be made and filled in one single operation. To this end, the liquid to be bottled is used during filling to shape the receptacle. We were very excited at the positive response our Moisture Meter technology received and the tremendous interest from customers in exploring it further.” Moisture Meter, a resin moisture analyser The Moisture Meter project was started at Moretto six years ago and is the culmination of the cooperation between two universities and an independent research laboratory. Trial applications, at Moretto customer sites, have been running for over a year and have contributed to continued product development. With this instrument it is possible to certify the production of plastic parts and when installed directly on the processing machine, measures the actual moisture content of the plastic granules. No calibration is required, it is only necessary to select the polymer to be treated, from an included materials database, and Moisture Meter will continuously control the process with sampling every 10s. It represents the missing link in the overall drying process. Complementing this instrument is also the facility for on-demand analysis to produce reports on production data by hour, minute, or, in the case of single cavity mould production, a report for every printed piece. The instrument comes equipped with Ethernet, USB, RS485 communication ports and is compatible with the Moretto Mowis monitoring system. With the Moisture Meter Plus upgrade it is possible to control the dryer performance by comparing the humidity from the initial part of the process to the end and automatically adjusting the dryer parameters to ensure optimal drying. This concept creates a closed loop connecting the material, dryer, process quality, and plastic processing machine, resulting in a condition that leads straight towards Industry 4.0. XD12 Mini dryer Moretto has a broad range of dryers available on the market including the Xmax range, the largest constant performance drying systems. The beating heart of these systems, the traditional double eyelid shutter, is unchanged, featuring 25 milliseconds per batch, which is 10 times faster than the most accredited competitors offering significant visibility to the operating process. The DGM machine, which has a redesigned chassis, has four opening sides, featuring four transparent panels that provide unique visibility to the dosing process. The internal parts of the machine are illuminated with multicolour LED lighting with four different colours to signal the machine operating status. Srl. This summary captures highlights of the two day Recycled Polyester and PET Packaging Conference which took place September 21 – 23 in Shanghai, China. Despite the pressure of low crude oil and virgin PET prices on the polyester recycling industry, the 280 participants and exhibition visitors from China and abroad demonstrated their ongoing interest. As in 2015 the issue PET packaging enriched the whole rPET policy group with raw material sources and applications. The conference programme tackled three main topics: economy & market, process & equipment and processing & application. Of particular interest within the first topic “economy & market” was the contribution of Lin Shidong, Secretary General, Recycled Fiber Commission of CCFA. He described the current state of polyester recycling industry in China which is suffering from declining operational rates (61.4% in 2010 to 56.5% in 2015) of a large number of nonstandard small companies. Another criticism was the constant high rate of imported waste of about 40% or 2.02.2mio t/a. As a consequence of this he expressed the need for a government policy to increase efforts in the recycling of polyester textile waste and further improvements in waste collection systems and infrastructure. The presentations of the PET Packaging Conference in particular, gave a detailed view of economic environment. Hou Hui, Senior Economist of the Economic and Technology Research Center of Sinopec described in his presentation “Outlook for global petroleum market in 2017” the current dilemma of low oil prices and the ongoing economic restructuring in China. His comprehensive economic analysis included a look back at the history of the global economy as looking at forecasts for the future. Based on detailed market information the paper “Polyester Market 2016: Review and Perspective” was presented by Zhao Cheng, Dpt. Manager of Information at CCFEI. The analysis contained the 2016 market development of PX, PTA, MEG and polyester as well as the expectations for the immediate future. A new tool to organise and improve industrial processes was introduced by Chen Qinghua, President of Shanghai DataCVG Co. Ltd. with his presentation “We Support rPET Industry with Big Data”. This project underlined the need to first of all implement systems and hard-ware that are then able to generate, collect and process “Big Data”. This is particularly important for all new investments in the industry. The second topic “process & equipment” was dominated by machinery and process providers from Europe. The challenge has always been how to successfully balance cost-in-use without sacrificing final product integrity – all while keeping the best possible aesthetics and packaging communication for consumers. Achieving this delicate balance is something Sukano’s product line of ultimate light barrier technology aims to address. masterbatch formulation to a specific packaging shelf life requirement. Over 53,000 visitors came to find out more about technologies and trends in the sector from around 800 national and international exhibitors. The impression given by the event at its new setting was deemed to be positive and supports the decision to relocate to Shanghai and the modern exhibition centre. Of the 81,000m2 of space, 23,000m2 was occupied by 265 international companies. Messe München (Munich Trade Fair) and its subsidiary Messe München Shanghai (MM Shanghai) organising the international exhibitors area. PETplanet: Mr Kosak, it’s great that you’ve found the time for a brief discussion and low-down at this busy trade fair. In terms of your job, how have you found the year 2016 so far? Kosak: 2016 is certainly a challenge because of the three trade fairs that take place in quick succession between September and December: fdt, CBB and dti. Without an efficient team in Munich and on site - Johannesburg, Shanghai and Mumbai - these events wouldn’t be possible. PETplanet: Participants appear to have been impressed by CBB’s new location. Tell us more about the background and reasons for the move from Beijing to Shanghai. Kosak: The trade fair was held in Beijing from 1995 to 2014. The decision to relocate to Shanghai – especially after such a long time in one place – was understandably considered a brave step by Beijing Zhongqing Heli International Exhibition, our local trade fair partner. Because of its location and its role as a hub for Asia, Shanghai offers far more opportunities and potential, to both local and international exhibitors. PETplanet: Is it not true that when it comes to planning and holding such an event, the organisers need to have good intercultural skills? Kosak: The event’s success is ultimately due to the excellent collaboration between our two teams: Messe München and Messe München Shanghai. I can also say that our colleagues in China have become our friends and that both organisations have merged successfully together. PETplanet: How have your persuasive efforts been rewarded, here and now? Kosak: We have seen clear growth at this year’s CBB. One thing we have achieved is that 1/4 of the total space of CBB is occupied by international exhibitors. And that´s the part we are responsible for. So I think we did a great job in 2016. PETplanet: How have your exhibitors responded to the new environment, now that you have been able to gather your first experiences on site? Kosak: Everyone with whom we have spoken is happy! The logistics, in particular, have been found to be better than in Beijing. Everything has gone excellently. And this is the same as the feedback that we’ve had from both our international exhibitors as well as the Chinese companies who are exhibiting here. Thanks to the lightweighting expertise in the KHS Bottles & Shapes program, in the future bottles for beer and malt beer can be produced more cost effectively while saving resources. Here, KHS kept to its remit of not changing the bottle design. On the occasion of Brau Beviale, KHS presented the finished PET bottle which is, according to the company, not only of the highest quality but also much lighter than its predecessor. Despite the lower use of resources the lightweight PET bottles is said to boast undiminished high stability. “In order to achieve these optimum weight properties we exploit the concentrated expertise in our Bottles & Shapes program. This allows us to save on materials in both the bottle body and thread,” explains Christian Rommel, project engineer for Bottles & Shapes, when talking about the design process. KHS has made the neck ring much smaller and reduced the wall thickness in the neck and thread. Optimising the thread has not affected the fitting accuracy and sealing properties of the standard PCO 1881 closures – in accordance with customer specifications. The processability on the existing line has also in comprehensive laboratory and production tests.
