"BOTTLING / FILLING 22 our brand stand out in a very crowded marketplace. Our new bottles needed to offer convenient handling to our consumers and be robust enough to hold their ergonomic shape and carbonation once opened,” explains Beverley Reeves, Senior Brand Manager at Bickford’s. Talking water, the Sidel packaging team started from scratch: new containers were designed for the 1l Aqua Pura branded water, applicable both to sparkling and still water, with the latter one supported by the proven StarLite base. To accommodate future needs, Sidel also developed an additional 600ml design, perfectly applicable to a variety of recipes, including flavoured water. A redesign was needed also around the family of drinks previously packaged via hot-fill technology. In this case, the number one priority was to optimise the packaging, while keeping the same premium brand attributes, and also lightweighting the bottle. For instance, by changing the production set-up from hot-fill packaging to aseptic PET bottling with dry preform sterilisation, the Australian player halved the weight of their 1l juice bottle – down to 32g – while enhancing its attractiveness and expanding its shelf life up to eight months. The new bottles are designed with quite straight body panels with simplified ribbing at the sides to allow the application of either sleeve labels or PSL; the biggest format (1l) engraved with the iconic Bickford’s brand name. Flexibility for greater product variety Refreshed designs within a diversified, premium portfolio are answering the needs of a niche market, which is why Bickford’s is targeting small batch production; an approach perfectly supported by the Sidel low-speed aseptic line. To install the new set of equipment, Bickford’s reorganised the production set-up and raw material localisation: for instance, by removing two out of three hot-fill lines they had, they gained empty floor space to be dedicated to the new complete line. The challenge for Sidel’s team was to complete the installation without disrupting the production routines, while also securing the very high hygienic requirements needed in aseptic production. The new versatile PET line, set-up at the Adelaide plant, includes Tetra Pak Processing Systems technologies, guaranteeing full product safety and maximising uptime starting from the process step. Additionally, the Aseptic Combi Predis is completed by the Capdis system for dry cap decontamination, while the CSD Combi features the compact and hygienic BlendFill configuration, combining carbonator and filler in a single system for reduced consumption of CO2 . Gebo OptiDry, a fully washable, stainless steel drying system with a proven efficiency of over 99% is integrated. As part of the line, the customer opted also for Sidel’s proven Roll Adhesive labeller, ensuring great stability and precision in the process, plus a sleever intended to handle PSL. Bickford’s hyper-flexible line manages both aseptic and regular PET packaging on two different Combis, thus dealing with products featuring two different bottle necks, namely 28mm for CSD and 38 mm for the aseptically-bottled products. They chose to use one single End-of-Line (EOL) solution to optimise the TCO while leading to maximised uptime, as changeovers are very easy. This EOL includes a VersaWrap wrap-around case packer and a PalAccess palletiser. Both pieces of equipment are designed with multi-format versatility and fast and simple format changeovers in mind, therefore perfectly suiting Bickford’s needs. The line is now running at 12,000bph for the aseptically filled drinks and up to 18,000bph for the CSD products, with a greater efficiency than the one committed on the purchasing agreement, thus contributing to a production capacity reaching approximately 60 million bottles per year. www.sidel.com Supplier of preforms and inspection systems for preforms In this survey we would like to present you preform manufacturers and the inspection system suppliers who are taking care of the preforms before, during or after processing. "BOTTLING / FILLING PETplanet Insider Vol. 21 No. 04/20 petpla.net 21 Aseptic technology with dry preform sterilisation Flexible PET line for South Australia Bickford’s, a family-owned and treasured Australian brand, put their trust in Sidel for the very first time and installed a complete, flexible PET line, handling both sensitive beverages and carbonated soft drinks (CSD). Riding the wave of healthy living, Bickford’s was not only able to expand their portfolio but also to improve production efficiency and sustainability. All in all, this significantly optimised their Total Cost of Ownership (TCO), while relying on new bottle designs. Bickford’s is one of the oldest and most valued Australian brands, holding a premium positioning in the market with exports to 32 countries worldwide. Founded in 1839, they are an independently owned business, with head office and operations based in Adelaide (South Australia). Their offer is diverse: producing CSD, cordials, flavoured water, still and sparkling water as well as juices, dairy and non-dairy drinks, syrups and alcoholic beverages, such as beer, wine, spirits and cider. In Bickford’s home of Australia, as in many other countries, one can observe increasing health consciousness and wellness concerns as key drivers for the growth of beverage categories such as bottled water, especially flavoured options. Juices, nectars, soft drinks, isotonics and teas (JNSDIT) are also affected by this change in consumer behaviour and are predicted to show a positive trajectory in the next three years. Notably, Australia also has a strong coffee culture. Although the focus on RTD coffee clearly is about taste and functionality with customers seeking a quick energy boost, future products might shift towards health-promoting benefits. Furthermore, given the keen competition within these segments as well as the premiumisation trend across the board, new product developments are increasingly focusing on flavour variety, accompanied by the introduction of new packaging formats for further diversification in the market. In the beverage industry but in particular in water, JNSDIT and CSD segments, PET is projected to remain a popular packaging material in the future. Aseptic PET bottling with dry preform sterilisation To accommodate those opportunities, grow their share and diversify their portfolio, Bickford’s started to search for a very flexible production line, able to handle both still and sparkling, as well as low- and high-acid products with two different short bottle necks and two distinct decoration possibilities. For this particular challenge, they turned to Sidel for the first time in their long history. In fact, this also marks the very first time the Australian player has invested in aseptic technology with dry preform decontamination, which has not yet been widely adopted in the country. Angelo Kotses, Bickford’s CEO and owner says “We really wanted to diversify our product portfolio by introducing new references, including dairy products and plant-based alternatives, and by moving some drinks formerly packaged in glass and can to PET”. The Australian brand decided to inaugurate the cooperation with Sidel by investing in one complete, versatile PET line, managing both sensitive products and CSD through an Aseptic Combi Predis and a Combi SF300, respectively. This move helped Bickford’s enjoy great freedom in terms of packaging design. They can now benefit from the wide branding surface to apply both sleeve labels and pressure sensitive labels (PSL). Moreover, thanks to the dry preform sterilisation technology, the Australian player is also leveraging a safe, easy to operate, cost-efficient and sustainable packaging solution. The line welcomes expanded manufacturing capabilities in terms of volume and type of beverages, while switching quickly from one product to another. In total, the new line now processes more than 20 different SKUs including still water, coffee with milk, coffee with almonds, four different flavoured waters and eight types of juices – all in either 250ml, 500ml or 1l formats. Bottle and decoration design capabilities Throughout the project, Sidel’s packaging experts worked in close collaboration with Bickford’s marketing team to launch their products. “Looking at our water and CSD range filled through the Combi SF300, we wanted to achieve an iconic shape to help","@ID":23},

"TRADE SHOW REVIEW PETplanet Insider Vol. 21 No. 04/20 petpla.net 36 Trends and solutions in PET collection and recycling In the afternoon session of day two, the focus shifted to trends and solutions in the PET post-consumer collection and recycling. First, Wolfgang Ringel from Tomra gave an overview of the current state of Deposit Return Systems and it’s potential to grow. He was followed by Vincent Colard from Citeo, who spoke about the collection and sorting of ODR and PET trays in France and Citeo’s efforts to find circular solutions. Afterwards Gian de Belder from Procter & Gamble and Larry Logan from Digimarc presented the Holy Grail project on digital watermarks. Gian announced that several P&G brands will integrate digital watermarks with first shipments at the end of the year in Germany. To end this session, Nicolas Grotus from Pellenc ST gave an insightful presentation on Artificial Intelligence and its place in solving food and nonfood as well as other sorting challenges. The third session of the day focused on trends in PET trays recycling. Ana Fernandez, from Klöckner Pentaplast highlighted that “recycling PET thermoforms is the final step in closing the already successfull PET recycling loop”. Ana presented several projects that are working towards tray circularity. Afterwards, Mark Dawes from Dupont Teijin Films presented mono-material PET lidding flms and concluded that PET is a unique polymer that enables mono-material tray and lid solutions with high percentages of recycled content in direct food contact applications. Trends in chemical or back-to-monomer recycling The last session of this year’s Petcore Europe Conference focused on monomer/enhanced recycling which was generally seen as one of the most important long-term solutions to make PET even more circular. Heike Fischer from PETplanet introduced and moderated the session in which Leela Dilkes-Hoffman from the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, Wim Hoenderdaal from Indorama Ventures Europe and Bruno Van Gompel from Coca-Cola presented their views on PET monomer recycling. Leela described the recycling landscape: Prioritise where possible to preserving value. Mechanical recycling is a cost-effective form of recycling, but it can’t remove some additives and contaminants. There is a loss of material properties over time. The solvent based purification complements mechanical by removing additives. Material still has a decrease in average molecular weight over time. She stated: “There is a physical limit to how many times a polymer can go through that is why an “inner loop” is needed to complementary the outer loop.” She continued explaining the opportunities of depolymerisation:  This method helps to have more plastics circulate within the circular economy by complementing existing infrastructure  Acting as a ‘reset’ lever and allowing exchange of materials between different applications and value chains (e.g. textiles to packaging). Leela concludes: “We can’t chemically recycle our way out of the plastic pollution crisis!” Depolymerisation needs to be developed as an integrated, not an independent solution. There is still a need of a systems perspective. It does not eliminate the role of design and is not a replacement but a complement to mechanical recycling as well as reuse and new delivery models. Wim Hoenderdaal, Chairman of the PET Monomer Recycling Special Industry Group prepared ten most FAQs about PET monomer recycling. He started with the question: Which problems does PET monomer recycling solve? “With PET monomer recycling it is possible to recycle the hard to recyclable plastic which can now be transformed to the building blocks needed to create new, food-grade high quality polymer. Poor quality plastic packaging and other polyesters articles that are not currently recycled can be transformed and returned ‘as good as new’, not just once but again and again. PET monomer recycling in combination with mechanical recycling can make recycle contents of 70 to 80% feasible on a sustainable basis. It will also solve the waste problem: After all efforts from consumers and cost by the industry to collect and sort the plastic, we can give a guarantee that PET is recycled and not disappears afterwards in incineration or landfill.” Another question Wim answered was: Is it competing with mechanical recycling or is it complementary? For Wim it should be no question that monomer recycling is always complementary. He went on that good quality feedstock can and should be recycled mechanically. “While Europe uses approx. 4.5mio tonnes of PET for packaging, 50% might be good enough for mechanical recycling. Monomer recycling can recover the rest: coloured, opaque, multilayer, blends, thermoforms and other PET products (textiles).” Bruno van Gompel explained the strategic direction of Coca-Cola towards a world without waste: Coca-Cola will remove unnecessary and hard-torecycle single use packaging, will use 100% recycled and reusable content which is defined as a combination of mechanical, enhanced and plant-based PET to ensure a bottle made of no virgin fossil fuel based material. CocaCola is working to collect 100% of its packaging and is exploring refillable and packaging free delivery models. As an example Bruno introduced a 100% rPET bottle from Coca-Cola Sweden. Wim, Chairman of the PET Monomer Recycling Special Industry Group had the pleasure to announce that the first PET Monomer Recycling Forum 2020 will take place in Brussels very soon. www.petcore-europe.org Sebastian Lemp (Petcore Europe) F.l.t.r.: Wim Hoenderdaal (Indorama), Leela Dilkes-Hoffman (Ellen MacArthur Foundation) and Bruno Van Gompel (Coca-Cola).","@ID":38},

"BOTTLING / FILLING PETplanet Insider Vol. 21 No. 04/20 petpla.net 27 Baikalsea’s natural water Eternal values in a bottle By the side of the largest and deepest lake in the world, Sipa is helping Baikalsea Company bottle precious natural water from Lake Baikal and adjacent subterranean sources for thirsty consumers across Russia. Baikalsea Company is a Russian manufacturer of Baikal water in the premium segment, a leading manufacturer of bottled water from artesian sources: natural water Baikal Pearl, mineral sparkling water Baikal Reserve, as well as deep Baikal water Baikal 430. Sipa has installed two complete bottling lines for Baikalsea Company in Irkutsk, one beginning with Sipa’s SFR-12 EVO rotary stretch-blow moulding system and going all the way through to final product wrapping via an Isofill P filling station and a Genius PTF Fast Layer palletising unit, together with various other line elements from partner companies. Depending on bottle size, output can be as high as 24,000bph. Sipa installed a second complete line, for filling glass bottles. “Baikalsea Company is also particularly happy with the work we did with them on product design,” says Karina Sokhova in Sipa’s Moscow sales office. “Together we have created quite a number of new formats.” Baikalsea Company sells water with several different brand names in PET bottles ranging in size all the way from 330ml up to 2l. Vyechaslav Bulatov, Baikalsea Company’s production director says his company chose Sipa as its partner for its optimal ratio of quality to price. “During the project study phase and in the bidding process, Sipa showed interest in taking on projects, giving attention to the individual requirements of each of our brands,” he tells us. “Sipa’s specialists provided us with some very useful and novel recommendations.” Sipa’s Sokhova adds: “Obviously our key strengths are in PET bottle making and filling, but with Baikalsea Company we were also very well positioned to help them with the glass line, including several components produced by us in-house for tasks like bottle depalletisation, filling, inspection, labelling, and packaging. “We were able to include an innovative feature that enables a single robotic palletisation system to operate simultaneously for lines, PET and glass. Meanwhile, back at the beginning of the PET bottling line, operators appreciate how easy it is to use the SFR-12 EVO, especially setting it up for new recipes to produce high-quality bottles.” Baikalsea Company is very aware of its debt to nature for its success in bottling water from the lake, so it takes great care to be as friendly as it can to the environment. Sipa technology helps with such features as recovery of heated air as a means of saving energy. Water bottled by Baikalsea Company finds its way to consumers by numerous routes, via large and small retailers, hotels and restaurants. “Lake Baikal is one of the national symbols of Russia,” says Marketing Director Roman Gvozdinsky. “The image of Lake Baikal is one of the strongest and easily recognisable images in the country and abroad, symbolising eternal values, which everyone can relate to and understand.” www.sipa.com www.baikalsea. com +44 (0) 1254 584210 sales@petmachinery.com petmachinery.com Active for over 25 years, our global network and specialist knowledge makes us the go-to company for the sale or purchase of a PET machine. "CAPS & CLOSURES 31 PETplanet Insider Vol. 21 No. 04/20 petpla.net occurs parallel to the mould opening. What is new is that the direct-drive servo-electric ejectors can be amplified by a switchable hydraulic booster on demand. With the two different drive types, Engel claims to ensure that the machine operates with the best possible efficiency both during running production and during start-up after a production interruption. While the caps are not yet completely cooled and very easy to demould during ejection in ongoing production, the ejectors have to apply more force in stop situations to remove caps that have already cooled down in the mould. Since production interruptions are rare, it is more efficient to use servo-hydraulic drive amplification than to generally equip the machine with more powerful ejector drives. More powerful plasticising unit for poor-flowing HDPE The plasticising unit was completely redesigned in the course of the e-cap’s further development, as the properties of the materials to be processed have also changed. The raw material manufacturers have adapted the materials to the lower cap weights. For CSD (carbonated soft drink) caps, the melt flow index (MFI) of today’s HDPE grades is between 0.8 and 1.4 g per 10min. With very short cycle times, these values require particularly high plasticising rates. Engel has increased the torque of the plasticising drive accordingly and developed both a new plasticising screw and a new highly wear-resistant sliding ring non-return valve specifically for cap manufacture. Both products are part of the standard scope of supply of the new e-cap machines. With its new design, the barrier screw processes high viscosity HDPE in a particularly gentle way, even given high throughput levels, while ensuring a good melting rate and homogeneity of the melt. This further contributes to the high process stability and repeatability of e-cap machines. Optimising energy consumption Cleanliness and energy efficiency have been an essential focus of the series right from the outset. With an encapsulated toggle lever and a clean linear guide of the moving platen, the e-cap machines reliably meet the requirements of strictly regulated production in the food industry. The machines’ all-electric drive technology makes a major contribution to the energy efficiency. In addition, braking energy is recuperated, reliably preventing the need for expensive peak power. Thanks to the efficiency of the drives used, the e-cap machines also only require a minimum of coolant. The e-cap 380, for example, operates at high speed with an energy consumption of 0.37kWh per kilogram of pellets. The new e-cap is available in the sizes 220, 280, 380 and 420 with clamping forces from 2,200 to 4,200 kN. www.engelglobal.com l l textile packaging","@ID":33},

"With short cycle times of less than 2 s, the new e-cap ensures high precision and repeatability. Caps are becoming lighter and lighter, causing increasingly tough challenges for the injection moulding machine technology. CAPS & CLOSURES 30 PETplanet Insider Vol. 21 No. 04/20 petpla.net The next generation e-cap Fast, stable, efficient Engel presents the next generation of the all-electric e-cap injection moulding machine series for beverage caps. Short cycle times, high precision and low energy consumption are the features the Austrian engineers combined within the new machinery. At K 2010, Engel presented the first all-electric e-cap injection moulding machine. Until then, hydraulic machines using accumulators for the injection movement were the standard for the production of caps. The all-electric drive technology in this field of application was a revolution at the time. To date, the e-cap is the most energy-efficient cap machine on the market, Engel states, and at the same time the only high-performance machine tailored to the requirements of the caps and closures industry providing all-electric operation even with a clamping force range as high as 4,200kN. The average ROI is less than two years. High performance with frequent load changes “Since 2010, the requirements for beverage caps have changed substantially”, as Friedrich Mairhofer, Product Manager for all-electric injection moulding machines at Engel, explains. This is why the continuous further development of e-cap now is being integrated into a next generation machine. Continuous part weight reductions play a central role. “For still water, caps with a weight of significantly less than 1g are produced today,” says Mairhofer. “As a result, the cooling and cycle times have continued to drop. Where the cycle times ten years ago were still 2.5s, today’s cap machines need to be able to produce at two-second intervals and faster.” When developing the new generation of machines, the main focus was therefore both on performance and on stability. The new e-cap achieves even faster mould movements and is designed with an even more stable machine bed for more frequent load cycles. Ejector drives amplified with booster An e-cap 2440/380 is demonstrating the series’ new performance achievements by producing 29/25 caps in a 96-cavity mould by Plastisud. The shot weight is 1.3g per cavity with a cycle time of less than 2s. An HDPE from Borealis/Borouge is processed. The system is equipped with camera-supported 100% quality inspection by IMDvista and a dry air system by Eisbär. Further system partners are Piovan, PackSys Global and PSG. The reinforced frame and the reinforced mould mounting platens on the new e-cap ensure stability of the machine movements even with short cycles and small shot volumes. The result is outstanding reproduction of surface detail and a maximum number of good parts, claims Engel. The fast dry cycle times of 1.3s with the e-cap 380, for example, and the parallel movements included in the standard right from the outset make an important contribution to achieving cycle times of less than 2s. "PREFORM PRODUCTION PETplanet Insider Vol. 21 No. 04/20 petpla.net 15 CSD and hotfill packaging Preform manufacturing by Michael Maruschke Chandigarh is the capital of the northern Indian states of Punjab and Haryana. Due to its architecture, greenery safety and traffic management, it is widely considered the most organised and beautiful city in India. The area is well-known not only for its beauty and organisation but also for affordable utilities and governess. Tour Sponsors: F.r.t.l.: Sheilendra Kapardar, Rajesh Kumar and Michael Maruschke tion moulding machines: two 32-cavity HyPET 120 units and one 96-cavity HyPET 400. In addition to this they have ordered two 72-cavity HyPET 225 machines. Forty-five employees manipulate 13 different moulds producing preforms ranging from 23.7g to 48g for CSD and hotfill beverages. Total capacity is 30 t per day. PET raw material comes from Reliance and IVL Dhunseri, the two market leaders. As the company is co-located with its sole customer, transportation is not an issue. All production is carried in cardboard boxes & steel cages across to Coca-Cola’s production facilities in the area. Hindustan Closures Pvt. Ltd. May 2019 We met: Mr Sheilendra Kapardar, Plant Head & Mr Rajesh Kumar, Manager HR The factory of preform manufacturer Hindustan Closures Pvt. Ltd. is just a 40 min drive from Chandigarh, located in the same manufacturing estate as Coca-Cola, its biggest and only customer, which has been operating on the site since 1997. Hindustan Closures started preform production in 2011, with just two injection moulding machines. Today, its production floor is equipped with three Husky injecNo compromise on qualityby Michael Maruschke Epitome Petropack Limited, which was founded in Kolkata, West Bengal, by former banker Sumit Poddar in 2011, was established from outset to produce preforms for water, CSD and hotfill for supply to Coca-Cola and Pepsi. It began operations with four Husky machines: two H-PET AE (All-Electric) 230 t units and two HPP 4.0 225 t. A HyPET (AE) 225 has recently been added to the production floor. All the machines are equipped with 48 cavity moulds. Epitome Petropack Limited April 2019 We met: Mr Sumit Poddar, Director Mr Dheeraj Mishra, GM-Plant The company’s total production capacity is quoted to be 18,000 t/a. About 90% of the 14 g to 53 g preforms go directly to Pepsi and CocaCola, locally in Bengal and also to the North and West. The remaining preforms are supplied to other local bottlers. Raw material is supplied by Reliance and IVL Dhunseri, which have proved themselves to be reliable in quality and consistency. Some material is also imported from China. Every production step documented Appointment to the position of approved supplier to Coca-Cola or Pepsi inevitably mean regular, unannounced visits from these customers. Sumit explains in detail all the necessary documents, records and quality protocols that have to be in place. “Every production step is documented,” he said. “There can be no compromise on quality.” Every step in production and quality control is documented even beyond the normal standard. As the factory runs at full capacity, 24/7, regular preventive maintenance has to be carried out during operation. PET price helps to enter new applications Sumit estimates that growth in use of PET in India averages about 10%, with Eastern India showing higher rates: about 15%. He has seen new preform manufacturing, companies emerge and then vanish, pretty much every year. In general, he considers PET technically as a premium product with special properties. In contrast with a few years ago, the price of PET is now similar to HDPE. This development has helped PET to gain a foothold in a range of bottle-related applications. www.epitomepetropack.com F.r.t.l.: Sumit Poddar, Dheeraj Mishra and Michael Maruschke","@ID":17},

If you are working in the drinks’ manufacturing sector, you will be having to deal with a significant rise in regional demand under increasingly demanding circumstances such as sick staff, difficult logistics or even shortages in the supply of raw materials. Companies in China and Italy in particular are being confronted with major challenges, which businesses in other countries have yet to face. Trade fairs are also being hit hard, with Chinaplas moved from April to August and Interpack from May to next year, to list just two of many such examples. We are also facing a number of challenges at our publishing house. All our employees work in the home office and we had, in fact, carried out an upgrade of our IT systems at the end of last year. Unfortunately, we have to admit that our global distribution of magazines is not running as smoothly as we would hope. We have therefore decided to send you an online access link via e-mail in addition to the printed magazine. If you do not receive this e-mail, it means we do not have your address on our system. We are currently working on a new idea, more of which we will share with you as usual from the regions. Keep well! Yours Alexander Büchler Dear readers,","@ID":5},

"DIGITALISATION PETplanet Insider Vol. 21 No. 04/20 petpla.net 12 The customer can here choose between the following services:  Connect - The Connect Module serves as a central node and a digital twin for all information relevant to production.  Watchdog - This module serves to keep an eye on particular data points. In the event of a possible limit value violation, a message will immediately go to the employees responsible, who can then react at an early stage, and initiate the requisite action on the basis of action recommendations.  Assistance - This application enables all maintenance jobs to be managed, monitored and documented. Assistance is subdivided into two other modules: Maintenance, for setting up and managing maintenance and repair orders, and Components, for managing and ordering maintenance-relevant spare parts.  Performance - This is used to visualise all KPIs in realtime. The user receives an overview of the units produced or also status information on production and downtimes. This information is additionally outputted in a machine report which also contains standstill classifications, and an accumulated loss display using a waterfall diagram. Performance records machine standstills occurring, and arranges them in different categories. As soon as the same malfunction is being documented too frequently, the records can be used to identify the causes involved, to remedy malfunctions, and to avoid downtimes. The various services provide the client with a complete overview of his production operation. He receives complete transparency, enabling him to identify optimisation potentials, so as to upgrade quality and productivity, and reduce his costs. Thanks to centralised data storage in the Cloud, this information can be viewed at any time and from any location only by himself and his employees. Data sovereignty versus digitalisation For many companies, however, digitalisation poses a definite challenge, particularly in regard to protecting their own data. The fact that valuable, crucial knowledge is not being stored on the firms’ own servers creates quite a bit of scepticism. The decision-makers feel themselves to be facing a dilemma: data sovereignty versus production of the future. “Many customers are wondering why ever they should want to store their data in a Cloud. But there are some very good reasons for this. Firstly, it renders the information accessible at any time and at any location, and thus secures a higher level of data availability through a fail-safe hosting network, and in addition they can save substantial capital investment and maintenance costs. Within the existing IT landscape, it’s true, fast computing operations can indeed be performed, but complex data science models, by contrast, require very substantial computing power and central processing units. These are often unavailable locally,” explains Severin Diepold, Managing Director of Syskron X and responsible for the Syskron Cloud Solutions. “And not least, the Cloud meets more stringent, more contemporary security standards, through redundant backups and updates, for instance, than a company can itself guarantee.” This is why the choice of a suitable Cloud computing provider had to meet maximally stringent security stipulations. The firm ultimately selected proved to be Amazon Web Services (AWS), who scored highly with a strict compliance programme, security audits and certifications (including ISO 27017, SOC 2 or C5 [Germany]). www.krones.com By developing Share2Act, Syskron has created a multi-client-capability platform in which machines from different manufacturers can be linked and imaged, while providing many functionalities that are offered in classical MES suites.","@ID":14},

"BOTTLE MAKING 16 PETplanet Insider Vol. 21 No. 04/20 petpla.net Its output of 3,000 bph/cavity – 24,000 bph in total – is designed to make it a suitable candidate for medium-capacity (400 bpm) bottled water production lines. Previously, that level of output would have required a 12-cavity machine; the higher production capacity of Chumpower’s eight-cavity LSS8 means that purchasers can increase their output with a lower capital investment commitment to new equipment. The LSS8’s design, specification and performance are the result of an extensive program of simulations and iterations by Chumpower’s in-house engineering team. The design for the clamping system’s mechanical structure and dual servo operation that was accepted for production contributes to a 13.5% incremental in efficiency. Other areas, such as preform handling and stretch-blowing systems, were also developed for optimum gain. In response to market demands for improved “user friendliness”, including simpler and more efficient changeovers, the LSS8 incorporates a new clamping, mandrels, conveyors, unscramblers and heating and ventilation systems. The new clamping system enable users to take out both sides of the mould simultaneously, rather than one side at a time. The new, “quickmandrel change” feature enables all 168 mandrels to be changed without the need for specialist tools. Chumpower claims that changeover can now be completed twice as fast as previous models and standard designs managed; in one hour, rather than two. The bottle discharge air conveyor unit has also been redesigned. It can be slid to the side, thus allowing easy access to the mould. The need for readjustment after the mould has been replaced has been minimised, which helps to save time during changeovers. The unscrambler unit and infeed slide rail have been redesigned to allow easy adjustments during format change, to cater for different neck finishes. A number of aspects of components have been re-engineered, in order to ensure consistency in bottle quality. The oven ventilation system has been improved, to enable better air flow; mandrel cooling helps to maintain neck dimension stability. The machine’s heating lamps are closed-loop controlled, to ensure precise preform temperature profiling; any fluctuation during heating can be automatically compensated by the controller. Stable heating and proper ventilation combine to deliver consistency in the heating of preforms, ready for stretch blowing. Chumpower presents eight-cavity CPSB-LSS8 Eight cavities, high output Chumpower Machinery Corporation has been a leading Taiwanese manufacturer of stretch-blow moulding machines for over 30 years. Its current product range includes single- and two-stage stretch blow mould (SBM) machinery; bottle moulds; and preform injection moulds. "MATERIALS / RECYCLING PETplanet Insider Vol. 21 No. 04/20 petpla.net 14 PET with special properties by Michael Maruschke Ester Industries Limited, which is headquartered in Gurgaon (Gurugram), Haryana State, India has been manufacturing polyester films for more than 35 years. Ester is made up of three business divisions: BoPET Films, Engineering Plastics and Specialty Polymers. They have production capacities of 57,000 tonnes/year; 26,000 tonnes/year; and 47,000 tonnes/ year, respectively. Its primary manufacturing facility is located at Khatima (Uttarakhand), about 300 km North of New Delhi. Ester Industries Ltd., May 2019 We met: Dr Richa Prakash, R&D (Specialty Polymers) Mr Girish Behal, Polyester Films SBU The company manufactures and markets a comprehensive range of polyesters, including PET, PBT, PEN, PTT and allied co-polymers. Ester reports that the importance of recycled PET-based compounds and masterbatches has increased in recent years, a factor that has been reflected in its production and manufacturing focus. From hotfill to PET kegs Ester’s speciality polymer division has established a niche in the supply of specialty compounds, beyond regular PET resins. These include heatresistant PET compounds for hot-fill applications, such as honey, ketchup and cordial drinks concentrates. With temperature resistance of up to 92 °C, Ester’s compounds offer characteristics at the upper end of what is available in the market. Ester has also developed expertise in the manufacture of scratchresistant PET, including a sub-HR PET bottles are recycled, mainly for subsequent use in fibres. Ester and some other companies in India have started making products using rPET for packaging solutions in non-food industry. As a raw material supplier and film manufacturer, Ester Industries can view rPET from another perspective. It already operates an in-house recycling system from Erema, including its solid state polycondensation (SSP) process, for its PET film plant, which has a capacity of 100 tonnes per day. The recycled material is mainly exported, to the US, Europe and China. The company intends to further push its general PET recycling activities: a flakes to pellets recycling system from Starlinger will be installed in few months. There are two officially recognised kinds of liquors: IMIL and IMFL (Indian Made Foreign Liquor). As alcohol tax is a major source of income for the state government, the liquor market is highly regulated. IMIL can only be sold in the state where it was produced; tax is collected by the local authorities. Alcohol content is regulated at 11.4% to 22.8% v/v. Product label, production processes and working hours are also regulated by the State Excise Authority. Only shift working is allowed in presence of State excise officer. Within these constraints, IFB Agro is in a position to produce about 15 million bottles per month. In total, the company has six bottling units, including three tie-up operation units. Bottles are supplied from the different nearby PET blowing factory. “Unique” bottle design Glass bottles predominated in the IMIL market until about five years ago, when liquor manufacturers and bottle suppliers tried to convince the authorities of the value of PET as a packaging option. After a lengthy process, the government duly approved the use of PET bottles with an aluminium closure system, which all companies had to follow. The switch from glass to PET achieved a significant weight reduction and further bottle development has followed. Another 20% weight reduction was achieved by changing the 18 g PET bottle with aluminium cap on 28mm neck to a 14.4 g PET bottle with 25mm neck. IFB Agro’s switchover from glass to PET and subsequent bottle development was achieved in close cooperation with Magpet. IFB Agro currently fills its main Captain, Dil Se, Joy and Hero clear and fruit flavoured liquor brands in 180ml, 300ml, 375ml and 600ml PET bottles size. www.ifbagro.in Debasis Ghosh with his product range Tour Sponsors: June 2-5, 2020, Mexico City at the Krones booth No. 2800 German Technology","@ID":21},

"BOTTLING / FILLING PETplanet Insider Vol. 21 No. 04/20 petpla.net 29 projects we’ve been able to prove that KHS offers excellent water bottling systems in the low-capacity range.” All capacity levels are now in demand in Africa and most water bottling systems are sold in the KHS Middle East/ Africa Market Zone managed by executive vice-president Markus Auinger. The Innofill PET NV water filler is the first machine designed for still water that Coca-Cola Beverages Africa in Uganda has acquired. KHS has also implemented a PET line for carbonated Coca-Cola soft drinks installed in Mbarara in 2015 in Uganda. “Our experience with KHS has been very good. We know that we can rely on short delivery times, fast installation and commissioning and the expert support and flexibility of the KHS team,” explains Edward Ojede, project manager at CCBA in Uganda. Expertise in bottles Important was the support provided by the KHS experts in the company’s Bottles & Shapes program who contribute their expertise in the development and optimisation of bottles. Their consultancy service produces PET bottles which have been optimised in terms of both ecology and economy and boast line suitability; every time in compliance with the customer’s design concepts. Although the line was officially commissioned in May 2019 by the president of Uganda, represented by the minister of trade, industry and cooperatives, production has been running since the beginning of the year – and very smoothly at that. The performance figures of the new system have even exceeded CCBA’s high expectations. “We’re achieving a line efficiency of 98%,” says Conrad van Niekerk happily, managing director of CCBA Uganda. “And Rwenzori’s water bottling line operates around the clock, seven days a week. The performance figures of this line and those from Mbarara are the best in the entire group.” The expanded capacity is already reaching its limits, the key factor in CCBA’s output is the availability of water which is a limited and therefore precious resource in Uganda. In addition to efficiency, the subject of sustainability is becoming increasingly important not only for beverage producers in Uganda but for the rest of Africa as well. CCBA can score here, too: under the motto of ‘a world without waste’ CCBA wants to help ensure that by 2030 100% of all PET bottles sold are collected and recycled. Plastic Recycling Industries, a recycling initiative owned by CCBA and founded specifically for this purpose, buys collected PET bottles from consumers and then reintroduces them to the recovered materials cycle. If many more companies follow this example and are thus able to stem climate change, the glaciers of the Rwenzori Mountains will retain their beauty for a long time to come. www.khs.com The Innofill PET NV blocked with a stretch blow moulder is the first filler for still water that CCBA has procured in Uganda. "DIGITALISATION PETplanet Insider Vol. 21 No. 04/20 petpla.net 11 During the programming work, it was important for Syskron to ensure that the software solution could not only be customised to suit the different services, but could even be tailored to individual employees. For example, each employee receives his/her own account, in which only the information and functionalities are displayed that he/she needs for their daily work. Since Share2Act is Cloud-based, users can access the information flexibly and from any location through computers and mobile terminals. Theflexibility, however, shows up not only with the users and access to the data, but also with the user interface and the costs. Because thanks to a SaaS (Software as a Service) model, the customer does not purchase a costly and often unnecessary complete package, but can at any time and at need book individual elements in addition. Not least, an IIoT platform is essential for creating the basis for applications from the fields of machine learning or artificial intelligence. Only with the collection, classification and storage of extensive data from the production operation will it be possible in the future for systems to intelligently output specific statements and recommendations for action, and thus respond to the altering framework conditions in the beverage industry as well. All services mutually harmonised The individual services are claimed to complement each other in terms of their functionalities, intermesh seamlessly, and to provide each other with information. "DIGITALISATION PETplanet Insider Vol. 21 No. 04/20 petpla.net 10 Today, increasingly informative production data are being acquired and evaluated digitally. Companies are learning to get to know their production processes to an extent that at the time of the first computers was difficult to imagine. In beverage production operations, too, huge progress is being made, and Krones has long since been working on cross-manufacturer, cross-machine solutions. With its Syskron subsidiary, the company has a start-up within the group that is in operational terms largely detached from the conventional processes, and embraces new conceptual approaches, creates solutions, but wherever necessary can tap into the experience of Krones itself. Getting existing machines fit for digitalisation When it comes to digitalisation in the beverage industry, the development people at Syskron were in agreement that digitalisation must not exclude existing machines. For this reason, the Edge component ReadyKit was developed as one of the first products. ReadyKit as a managed computer enables the IT of the filling lines to be linked throughout for the purpose of acquiring the production data. It is particularly important in this context to ensure that both new and existing machines, plus equipment from Digitalisation and the beverage production industry A modularised look at the future It was nearly 80 years ago that Konrad Zuse developed the first universally programmable computer, and it’s almost 50 years ago now that the first personal computer appeared on the market. As the performative capabilities of the devices have increased, their fields of application have also changed and expanded. Without the complex information processing provided by these electronic brains, our present-day lives would no longer be conceivable. These developments were the most important foundation for kickstarting a fourth industrial revolution, namely digitalisation. In this article, Krones examines the possibilities for the beverage production industry. third-party manufacturers, and even machines lacking a communication interface can be linked up. And since not all machines provide the same database, ReadyKit enables highly disparate data records to be read out and used to calculate ratios, for example, so as to create the foundation for further evaluations. This information is collected and saved in the Cloud, and can then be displayed, evaluated and utilised by the individual applications in the IIoT platform Share2Act from Syskron. Share2Act platform By developing Share2Act, the Krones subsidiary has created a multiclient-capability platform in which not only can every machine, even from different manufacturers, in future be linked and imaged in the production operation, but which at the same time provides functionalities that were offered in classical MES suites. Whereas in the past a vendor’s competence was determined by his ability to offer interfaces between individual systems such as line planning, production and quality management, and thus to offer harmonised solutions, it has now become possible, with technologies like Edge Devices, the Cloud and IIoT platforms, to provide a single product that in its core covers all supra-ordinate functions like access and user management while at the same time imaging extensive functionalities in the shape of individual modules, referred to as services. The advantage lies in a faster development process, which means users of such platforms can regularly, and at comparatively short intervals, receive new standardised functions and solutions.","@ID":12},

"PETplanet Insider Vol. 21 No. 04/20 petpla.net 35 TRADE SHOW REVIEW 35 TRADE SHOW REVIEW In the second session of the first day, experts from the PET value chain gave strategic outlooks from the PET producers’, converters’ and recyclers’ point of view. Steve Scott, Chairman of the Committee of PET Manufacturers Europe (CPME), addressed the PET market from the European PET producers’ perspective, providing his analysis of market developments as well as innovation and investment challenges. For 2020 3,466kt PET will be produced. It is a growth of 0.9% according to 2019. The big players will be Indorama with 33%, Neo Group with 13%, JBF 11% and Alpek UK with 11% of PET production. Nicolas Lorenz, from PACCOR, gave a converter’s vision for the future in his presentation, in which he focused on PET trays. The presentation showcased key areas for the future of PET and contained a strong message to the value chain: “We, the packaging manufacturers must work together to find out how packaging can be connected with the environment in the future.” He highlighted that the packaging of the future has to have the ability to communicate within the complete value chain but also with the new generation of consumers. For him the key lies in the digitalisation of packaging. In the third presentation Casper van den Dungen, Plastics Recyclers Europe (PRE), gave a summary on what has changed in the past 12 months as well as an overview of the efforts needed to meet future recycling targets. To reach the targets of rPET production in 2025 a capacity of 520kMT plus are needed and have to be manufactured in 20 new recycling plants. By comparing the current situation of already existing deposit systems and planned systems for 2025 there will be a lack of 420kMT in PET collection. Casper concluded: “The PET bottle collection is the main development which needs to advance in info@hasplastik.com Tel: +90 212 695 50 00 Fax: +90 212 694 97 24 100815dmyR .com reaching 77% collection target in 2025. New deposit bottle countries are planned until 2025 but more is needed. 520kMT new bottles to bottler PET capacity is required, target 4-5 plants/year, new or upgrades. Standards are needed for both feedstock & rPET for mineral water or soft drinks.” The third and last session of the day focused on technical challenges for the PET industry. MarieCatherine Coquin from Danone and Cesar Velilla from Nestlé Waters provided an overview of good practices for NIAS (nonintentionally added substances) evaluation and the work of the Petcore Europe Special Industry Group on PET NIAS (PING). The second day of the conference started with the morning session focusing on “PET in the circular economy - a global perspective”. A significant highlight of the conference was the presentation by Rana Pant from the European Commission. Rana, Policy Officer at DG ENV focusing on the SUP Directive, gave a detailed overview of the SUP Directive and Essential Requirements in the PPWD. He insisted on an evaluation and follow-up of the new regulations by the European Commission as well as most likely an elaboration of a positive & negative recycling list. Professor Kim Ragaert from the University of Ghent presented what is needed to make PET pots, tubs and trays roll down the bottles road into circular economy. Kim concluded her presentation by stating that bottlegrade PET made it to the posterchild of plastics recycling due to industry collaboration. PET trays have the same potential; with a few neat tricks provided by science it can follow the bottles into circular economy. After analysing the feedstock quantity, quality and collection, sorting, separation and pre-treatments polymer science to predict quality should be used. "8 NEWS PETplanet Insider Vol. 21 No. 04/20 petpla.net Sukano NIR detectable black masterbatch included on French positive list by Citeo and Cotrep Sukano, a global masterbatch specialist for PET, PLA and specialty resins, has been certified according to the Ccotrep recyclability test protocol and will be featured in the Citeo positive list. This gives brand owners a documented ‘end of life’ alternative as it ensures the sorting and recycling of black PET products while supporting their recycling goals. Collection and sorting are two critical drivers that prevent PET trays, tubes and pots from being sent for recycling. While collection improvements should be addressed at the municipal level, industry can support the common goal of a circular economy by improving sorting and recycling, states Sukano. To recycle plastic packaging, plastic waste is presorted at recycling facilities. In most recycling facilities, this is done by automated sorting technologies using near-infrared (NIR) optical sorters. One key limitation to near-infrared optical sorting is its inability to identify and separate plastics that contain carbon black, the most commonly used black pigment. This is because carbon black absorbs a significant amount of ultraviolet and infrared spectrum light, preventing the reflection of infrared light back to the sensor – and consequently blocking the recognition by an NIR scan. As a result, black PET end applications are not massively recycled today. Sukano’s newly formulated Sukano NIR-Black detectable and certified masterbatch has been tested by the authorised sorting equipment manufacturing companies according to the Cotrep protocol. Cotrep is an operational technical committee created by Citeo, Elipso, and Valorplast. It assists manufacturers in the development of recyclable plastic packaging solutions in France. Once packaging has been positively tested according to the Cotrep protocol, the product is listed in the Citeo positive list, which will soon be launched. Citeo works to reduce the environmental impact of household packaging and paper by transforming them into new resources. Among the advantages of products being tested by Cotrep and listed by Citeo is an exemption from the malus fee in France. www.sukano.com Indorama Ventures team to grow the PET recycling business Indorama Ventures Public Company Limited (IVL), a global chemical producer, announced its full year and fourth quarter 2019 financial results. The company undertook several transformative initiatives that were announced on 4th Feb 2020 at its Capital Market Day and are expected to generate benefits starting in 2020 and targeted to lead to $350 million in run rate cost savings by 2023. "TRADE SHOW PREVIEW PETplanet Insider Vol. 21 No. 04/20 petpla.net 33 Voices from the industry Chinaplas, coronavirus and the supply chains Normally on these pages we would have been presenting an overview of the PET-relevant exhibits at Chinaplas. But Chinaplas has now been postponed until August 2020, and so has our Chinaplas preview (which you will find in the July/August 2020 issue of PETplanet). Nevertheless, we asked a few of the companies regularly exhibiting at Chinaplas, what effects the postponement of the fair would have for them, what highlights visitors can look forward to in August but also, how coronavirus is affecting their business overall. Reports from China have indicated that production has now resumed in some of the plants that were temporarily closed. However, official figures from the Chinese authorities, claiming that over 80 per cent of large companies are back at work, should be treated with caution, according to the IHK (Industrie- und Handelskammer Germany). In a quick poll by the Greater China Chamber of Commerce Abroad, over 96 per cent of all German companies in China stated that their business in the country was being affected by the coronavirus. The further spread of the virus is likely to create new difficulties in supply chains elsewhere, the effects of which cannot be foreseen at this stage. Let us hope that we return to normality as soon as possible. Until then, stay healthy! Otto Hofstetter How has the coronavirus affected your business? Instead of few weeks down for Chinese New Year, the business is slowing down for almost 6 to 8 weeks. Our subsidiary has been back to work in full operation. For some customer visits Mainland China (Service requests) travel is complicated and time-consuming to get permission from the companies and authorities involved. Service interventions abroad (like Japan/ South Korea/SEA) aren’t possible at this time with our local Service team, based in Shenzhen. How do you assess the postponement of the Chinaplas trade show? As we do have a smaller booth with around 5 participants, it isn’t such a big deal for us. We do hope that Chinaplas will take place in August. Cancelling just the flight might be costly. The hotel we booked changed the date without prior notice. Which PET highlights can visitors to your stand at Chinaplas in August look forward to? We are going to present a new mould monitoring system which works independently from any machine controller and network; it is called OH-Xport. OH-Xport helps to extend the life-time of the mould as this equipment is monitoring some key-figures, like cooling performance, clamping force and so on. As in previous exhibitions in addition to Otto Hofstetter AG, the traditional mould-making company, we will be presenting Otto Systems AG which offers complete turn-key PET Systems. Sacmi Imola How has the coronavirus affected your business? Sacmi is an international company. For this reason we have, since the earliest stages of the emergency, taken all necessary precautions to safeguard the health of our staff and the communities concerned. The Covid-19 emergency will, naturally, have an impact on our economies and, therefore, on business relations between our countries, which are, at this time, severely restricted. That said, we’re highly confident that the measures put in place by the national authorities can achieve the desired goal and open the way towards a new phase of development. How do you assess the postponement of the Chinaplas trade show? It is, we think, a sensible decision, as August is the peak period for machine sales. Of course, doing so has had an organisational impact as we’d already prepared every aspect of our participation at the fair, an event of strategic importance to our growth prospects on Chinese and Asian markets. Nevertheless, we acknowledge that it is - also in light of just how difficult it is to predict the situation that might have come about in the field, in China and beyond - the right response at this time. Which PET highlights can visitors to your stand at Chinaplas in August look forward to? Our highlights remain as announced, and largely focus on efficiency, sustainability, versatility and green packaging. For years now, Sacmi has been working to implement - right across our standard machine range - solutions that rise to the challenge of recycling and re-use, a challenge that will be crucial to the future of plastics. CHT Group How has the coronavirus affected your business? It recently started to affect our business as customer visits and exhibitions were cancelled, lead times especially in Asia needed to be adjusted and internally precautions were done. Especially in China many companies have not yet started after Chinese New Year holidays and bottle sources have plummeted. The falling crude oil price is resulting in a bigger gap between the recycled PET and virgin PET, which has another negative influence on the recyclers in Asia. How do you assess the postponement of the Chinaplas trade show? I guess that it is the right decision to postpone these kind of events where many people from all over the world come to visit. Which PET highlights can visitors to your stand at Chinaplas in August look forward to? We will not have a booth.","@ID":35},

"TOP TALK PETplanet Insider Vol. 21 No. 04/20 petpla.net 20 The PET Forum calls for an independent environmental review of beverages’ packaging “Disposable bottles are better than their reputation” The Forum PET at the German Association of Plastic Packaging and Films (IK) which represents manufacturers of both disposable and reusable PET drinks’ bottles, called on the German Government to undertake a balanced assessment on the impact of disposable bottles on the environment. According to the Forum PET, an independent life-cycle assessment should be carried out by the Federal Environment Agency. The federal budget has already set aside € 400,000 specifically for this purpose. Debates on disposable versus reusable bottles are influenced by old prejudices, with many arguments still being made by supporters of reusable bottles which have long since been irrelevant, as the organisation states. However, demands are still being made for the introduction of a reusable quota of 70% which are based on out-of-date information. An independent life-cycle review is meant to establish hard facts: The reusable lobby refuses to cooperate Unfortunately, the reusable packaging lobby has already said it will not accept the findings of such a review even if conducted objectively by the Federal Environment Agency. “They are afraid of fair comparisons being made between disposable and reusable bottles. Everyone knows that another life-cycle assessment is likely to bring new evidence to light that supporters of reusable quotas will not like”, said Dr Isabell Schmidt, IK’s Managing Director, in her reaction to the lobby’s refusal to engage. “The reputation of reusable drinks’ bottles is now so strong that their environmental footprint is no longer being questioned. It is taken for granted that reusable bottles are more environmentally-friendly than disposable ones. However, this is not the case. A glance at the life-cycle assessment shows that transport logistics in particular can be the reusable bottle’s Achilles’ heel. They are still appropriate for regional distribution purposes and in the use of so-called pool bottles. However, this starts to become a problem when large bottles are transported over long distances”, Dr Schmidt added. 10-year old data still influencing the debate It is 10 years since the last representative life-cycle review of mineral water and soft drinks’ packaging. Even then, it failed to come up with a definitive answer. Although the PET refillable bottle achieved the best rating, its glass counterpart was certainly no better in terms of its CO2 footprint than the disposable PET bottle which has a returnable deposit. Many years have gone by since then during which the drinks’ market has evolved further in promoting disposable bottle systems. The deposit scheme provides a self-contained and efficient recycling process for disposable PET bottles. The re-use of recyclates in bottles is increasing all the time, having recently achieved a market share average of 26%. “There are PET bottles on the market now which prove that bottles can be made from 100% recycled material”, said Dr Schmidt. Individual bottles increase transport volume By contrast, the share of single multi-use bottles in the reusable sector has risen sharply in recent years. The reason for this is marketing. Drinks’ brands in individual bottles are more easily recognised and therefore the consumer’s preferred choice. However, unlike pool bottles, individual bottles have to be returned to their original bottler and cannot be used by another outlet nearby which is resulting in huge increases in logistics expenditure. Current projections from the Society for Packaging Market Research show that daily traffic volume would increase by 2,850 truck journeys if the proportion of reusable bottles went up to 70%. This would increase CO2 emissions by around 400,000 t/a which is the equivalent of more than six million domestic air flights. “The reusable quota being demanded would be the wrong decision from a climate change perspective”, said Dr Schmidt. www.forum-pet.de www.newsroom. kunststoffverpackungen.de Dr Isabell Schmidt, Managing Director at the German Association of Plastic Packaging and Films (IK)","@ID":22},

The up to 3,000mm of rain per square meter that fall here every year form many rivers, some of which are tributaries of the White Nile. Growth product water It’s therefore no surprise that – in the company’s own words – one of Uganda’s best and largest mineral water brands was named Rwenzori and depicts the mountain range on its logo. The product is bottled nearly 300 km from Margherita Peak in Namanve in the greater Kampala area of the Ugandan capital. When the Rwenzori Bottling Company began operations in 1993, it faced the challenge that bottled water was still a relatively new and unknown product to many people in Africa. This has changed a lot since then: the sale of bottled water has literally skyrocketed throughout Uganda, especially in urban centers – and today annual growth rates are still at 10% and more. This development has been precipitated by the growing awareness that this water is safe to drink than tap water, better in quality and a brand with a long tradition. This is a claim Rwenzori makes in particular regarding its Pure Natural Mineral Water product: predominately middle- and upper-class consumers value this still water highly which they find compelling with its good taste, balanced mineral content and absolute bacteriological purity. They are also willing to pay a higher price, which is around 30% more than that of the competition. Accordingly, the expectations regarding the packaging of this premium product bottled in PET are high. Rwenzori makes its own bottle caps. Exploiting potential In 2014 the Rwenzori Bottling Company was acquired by Coca-Cola Beverages Africa (CCBA) which operates in South and East Africa. Part of the new strategy is to locally integrate well-known mineral water brands into their own group in order to develop them further. Targeted marketing measures can effectively exploit the growth potential – in addition to Uganda this is already happening in Kenya, Ghana and Ethiopia. Rwenzori also has plans for further growth of its water brand which already has gained an approximately 65% share of the Ugandan market. However, there’s no more space available for a new production line at the main plant where three smaller bottling lines are in operation. Instead, operations are to be expanded on the site belonging to CCBA subsidiary Century Bottling Company a few hundred meters away. The group is investing a total of US$ 10 million. The new PET line KHS was awarded the contract for the new PET line. In addition to an Innoket Neo labeller the package includes an InnoPET BloFill stretch blow moulder/filler block with a capacity of up to 25,000 bph (500ml). “This is the second water bottling line that CCBA will be receiving from us within a very short space of time,” says Denise Schneider-Walimohamed, managing director of KHS East Africa. “Last year we installed an almost identical line at Voltic in Ghana. Until now many customers in the region have actually associated KHS with higher-capacity machines outputting up to 80,000 bph. With these two With a market share of 65% Uganda’s Rwenzori water brand is not only a success story in Africa but worldwide. The high quality of Rwenzori’s mineral water is distinguished by its good taste, balanced mineral content and absolute bacteriological purity.","@ID":30},

"PETnews 6 NEWS PETplanet Insider Vol. 21 No. 04/20 petpla.net Strengthening sales activites Xabier Noguera, ABC Compressors sales and service director, has degree in business administration from the University of Deusto, specialising in strategic management. His industry experience includes more than 10 years at furniture fittings company Indaux, which he joined after working for the European operations of Colep, a consumer goods packaging and contract manufacturer. He began his professional career as a consultant in Brussels and in Italy for the Eurogap Strategic Marketing Consultancy. Xabier’s position at ABC is key in the company’s ongoing efforts to determine future challenges and the actions needed to meet them: “The first is to maintain and boost our commitment to the environment, reducing the carbon footprint. More than a challenge, it is a solid future aim, and we are already a driving force in supplying solutions to achieve this. The second major challenge focuses on developing machines that are better adapted to any client situation, covering airflow, temperature, certifications, etc., and ultimately to offer the best compressor for every need. This is the result of a continual research and improvement process, the basis of our philosophy.” He identifies the company’s third challenge as continuing the strategy of international expansion and growth. www.abc-compressors.com Alpla builds new plant in Lanseria, Johannesburg The new production site near Johannesburg bundles activities from five existing plants. Alpla Group, an international specialist for plastic packaging and recycling, is building a factory in the province of Gauteng. The groundbreaking work began in February 2020 and completion of the building is scheduled for summer 2021. The location lies in an emerging area northwest of Johannesburg, with an excellent infrastructure. Concentrating on one plant simplifies and optimises manufacturing processes and contributes significantly to improving logistics and transport. Standard bottle solutions and tailor-made packaging for the food, personal care, home care, chemical, detergent and pharmaceutical industries will be predominantly manufactured as before. Customers include international groups as well as smaller, local players. As part of the consolidation the management contemplates that more than 50 employees would be impacted. Accordingly, a notice in terms of section 189(3) of the LRA will be issued. Trade unions have been informed of these intentions. In the past five years, Alpla has expanded its market presence in Africa with acquisitions and cooperation agreements. This included in particular the acquisition of the African market leader for PET preforms, PET bottles and closures Boxmore Packaging in 2017. With the construction of a new production site in South Africa, Alpla is now creating the basis for long-term growth and competitiveness in the Sub-Saharan African region. As part of a consolidation, the production of five existing plants in Harrismith, Denver, Isando, Kempton Park and Samrand will be transferred to the new plant in Lanseria. www.alpla.com Loop Industries announces signature of multi-year supply agreement with L’Oréal Loop Industries, Inc. announced that they have entered into a multi-year offtake agreement with beauty industry brand L’Oréal to supply them with PET resin made of 100% recycled materials for their packaging needs. This resin is to be supplied from Loop Industries’ joint venture facility in Spartanburg, South Carolina, USA with Indorama Ventures, a global integrated leader in PET plastic and polyester fibre manufacturing. The growing demand for Loop Industries’ resin has driven the joint venture’s decision to increase the facility’s production capacity to 40kt per year, thus enabling Loop Industries to broaden its array of partnerships and supply more brands with resin made from waste PET plastic and polyester fibre. Thanks to Loop Industries’ low-energy technology, waste PET plastic and polyester fibre can be diverted away from landfills and natural areas, depolymerised into its base building blocks, purified and polymerised into virgin-quality Loop PET resin. Started in 2018, the collaboration between L’Oréal and Loop Industries is now entering a new step forward with this agreement for the supply of sustainable PET resin. www.loopindustries.com Due to the current coronavirus / Covid-19 situation many events have been cancelled or postponed. "TRADE SHOW REVIEW PETplanet Insider Vol. 21 No. 04/20 petpla.net 34 Petcore Europe Conference February 2020 Circularity and innovation - Shaping the future of PET Each year the European PET value chain meets in Brussels for the annual Petcore Europe Conference. This year the two-day conference was held in Brussels to welcome more than 300 industry delegates. Under the theme “Circularity and Innovation - Shaping the future of PET”, the complete PET industry sector shared perspectives and strategies for a succesful and more circular future. From PET resin producers, masterbatch producers, packaging designers and manufacturers, equipment manufacturers, label producers to major brand owners, EPR schemes, waste management organisations, recyclers, waste sorting and recycling machinery manufacturers - the entire value chain was represented. Additionally, speakers and participants from the European Commission, the European Parliament, the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and Eunomia shared their thoughts on the PET market as well as the plastics industry in the Circular Economy. “Petcore Europe represents the entire PET value chain since 1993. The strength of the organisation is the engagement of over 90 participating member organisations working together on the circularity of PET through working groups and projects”, stated Stephen Short, President of Petcore Europe, when opening the conference. “This engagement of all members, in combination with Petcore Europe’s commitment to look for the entire sustainable packaging solution as a united industry, is a great value for all stakeholders involved. Petcore Europe’s growth over the past two years is remarkable, we could welcome over 50 new members”, added Christian Crépet, Executive Director of Petcore Europe. Perspectives and strategy for the PET value chain The focus of the first session was the current PET market. Andy Grant from Eunomia gave an overview of the PET collection and recycling rates for 2018/2019 as well as the key drivers of the market. According to Eunomia, significant improvements have been made in recycling processes and with the increasing quality of materials, rPET could reach as much as 55% of total PET demand by 2030. “A longterm trend shows overall growth in production and demand for PET, particularly in high viscosity PET”, Andy pointed out. According to Eunomia 3.4mt of PET is placed on the market for PET bottles, 0.9mt for PET trays. Alessandra Funcia, Head of Sales and Marketing Sukano, presented Petcore Europe’s two major working groups: The WG PET Thermoforms Recycling and WG on Recycling of Opaque and Functional PET packaging (former ODR). Alessandra focused on design for recycling as well as solutions for the uptake of recycled material from PET trays and ODR packaging. Sebastian Lemp, from Petcore Europe then focused on the need for the PET industry to communicate and showcase the (environmental) benefits of PET. Sebastian introduced some projects e.g. ZeLoop, the first circular economy rewarding plattform and strategies of other like-minded organisations and iniatives and concluded: “It’s time to work together and make the circularity of PET understood amongst policy makers and the public”.
