PepsiCo switches from plastic rings on multipacks to paper-based designs

As part of PepsiCo’s Pep+ (PepsiCo Positive) sustainable packaging programme to ensure packaging never becomes waste, the company is introducing paper-based solutions in North America to replace plastic rings in multipacks. PepsiCo Beverages North America (PBNA) announced on Aug. 24 the new paperboard designs that will be phased in regionally across the US later this year. This builds on the soft drinks giant’s progress in Canada, where the switch to cardboard has already begun.

The switch will affect brands such as Pepsi, Pepsi Zero, Mtn Dew, Starry, Gatorade and others. It will also include 7Up in Canada. The new packaging will be easy for customers to handle on the shelf, have a consumer-friendly brand design and will be made from recycled materials.

The move is intended to advance PepsiCo’s pep+ goals, which aim to reduce the amount of plastics from non-renewable sources per serving in its own global beverage and prepared foods portfolio by 50% by 2030 compared to 2020. As a result of this transition, the company aims to remove millions of kilograms of plastics from its packaging in North America over the coming years, while continuing to promote the recyclability of packaging.
