Company Profile

Carbios is a French company operating the field of biochemistry. Among other things, Carbios researches the "enzymatic biorecycling" of plastics, i.e. their decomposition with the aid of enzymes in order to subsequently reuse them. The company holds a number of worldwide patents. Among other things Carbios has invented an industrial application of enzymes renders plastic waste compostable. Carbios was founded in 2011 and is listed at the stock index Euronext Growth, a subsidiary of Euronext, since 2013.

Carbios is located in the science park Biopôle Clermont-Limagne, that is close to Saint-Beauzire, Puy-de-Dôme in the Auvergne. One of their partners is the INSA Toulouse (National Institute for Applied Sciences).

In 2025, a plant with a capacity of 50,000 tons of PET waste is scheduled to start up in Longlaville, France. The world's largest PET packaging recycler Indorama Ventures from Thailand plans to participate in the investment and, if successful, to operate its own new plants using the Carbios process.

  • 2019 - Carbios enters into an agreement with the French L'Oreal Group to jointly establish a consortium with the aim of recycling plastics by biotechnological means on an industrial scale
    • this consortium was joined in the same year by Nestlé Waters, PepsiCo and the Japanese beverage manufacturer Suntory Beverage & Food Europe
  • 2020 - first PET bottles made from textile waste
