Denua™ is strictly speaking not a company. It is the proprietary circular technology of Ioniqa, the clean-tech spinoff from the Eindhoven University of Technology (NL). In collaboration with Koch Technology Solutions (KTS) this catalytic upcycling process aims at achieving full circularisation of PET. Via a licensing business model both companies seeks to further improve the sustainability of the industry. The partnership addresses a growing demand for recycled contend in the 30 million metric t/a PET market.
With Denua's solution currently nonrecyclable PET waste can be transformed into materials that are suitable for high quality food grade applications such as beverage bottles.
The collaboration offers the market not only a technical solution when it comes to difficult to recycle PET waste, it also safeguards capacity of existing plants where integration is considered. KTS and Ioniqa view the technology as a disruptor in the PET industry providing a sustainable economic recycle proposition to conventional manufacturing routes.
The basis of the Denua™ process is at Ioniqa’s current plant in Geleen, the Netherlands, where the chemical recycling process for PET has been developed and operated at kiloton scale for several years. Through their proprietary catalytic upcycling process PET is reduced to the monomer BHET, a molecule that has been shown to be directly applicable in the PET resin production processes of major players such as Indorama.
The Denua™ technology can be easily integrated into an existing PET facility to take advantage of the infrastructure including utilities, logistics, and fundamental maintenance and operations capabilities.
The high-purity BHET produced can replace up to 100% of the virgin PTA and EG with optimal results. Denua™ can recycle most post-consumer PET, including sorter rejects, fines, and colored flakes into high-purity BHET and subsequent PET as opposed to mechanical recycling that requires high-purity clear flake feedstock. Despite the feedstock being low cost and low quality, the recycled PET (rPET) produced is superior to mechanical rPET, offering excellent clarity, virgin-like color, and no degradation in mechanical properties.
