Company Profile

Augwind was founded by Or Yogev and since its inception the company developed different elements that are required to create the most efficient Isothermal compressed air energy storage (I-CAES) solutions. The core developments are

  • Proprietary underground pressure chambers to store and pressurize gases and liquids
  • Proprietary liquid piston processes to enable high efficient isothermal compression and expansion of air

The interdisciplinary team of engineers puts the theory into practice at Augwind’s two R&D sites and at their collaboration partners’ facilities. Some of the innovations are already commercial. Augwind’s north star has remained the development of the AirBattery- a grid-scale multi-day energy storage system.

The company's goal is to bring net zero one step closer by enabling energy transition pioneers to bridge long supply and demand gaps, allowing further reliance on wind & solar.

In 2021 Augwind became a publicly traded company in the Israeli stock exchange.

Augwind’s Water Compressor system takes a different approach to compressed air from conventional solutions and is an evolution of Aug-wind’s AirBattery, an energy storage technology. Augwind's Water Compressor is a ultra-efficient, oil-free air compressor.

Compressed air accounts for about 12% of the electricity consumption in the industry. Traditional air compressors are relatively inefficient machines. As air is compressed, its temperature rises. Compressing warm air requires more energy, and the air must be cooled after compression stages and before usage. Augwind's Water Compressor is currently targeting high pressure (25-40 bar) oil-free applications.

Augwind's Water compressor system

The Water Compressor enables isothermal compression by utilizing a slow underground liquid piston process. Throughout the compression process there is constant heat exchange between the compressed air, water, and the earth. The technology includes Augwind’ s proprietary air buffer that allows the pumps to operate near their best efficiency point while thry deliver variable flows based on customer’s demand.

Key Advantages of the system

  • Approx. 25% less electricity consumed compared to best-in-class compressors
  • Oil free. (no oil used in the compressor process, lubrication or cooling process)
  • Compatible with sterile applications
  • No cooling water required, resulting in greater energy savings and eliminates the need for water treatment
  • Significant reduction of the environmental impact
  • All components are standard industrial components

Products

  • Energy storage
    • AirBattery (grid-scale, multiday energy storage)
    • Hydrogen Storage (innovation for site-able H2 storage)
  • Energy efficiency
    • Water compressor (ultra-efficient industrial air compressor)
    • AirSmart (optimization of compressed air systems)
